Today will be our third Friday celebrating Black History Month as we honor Jackie Robinson. In April of 1947, Robinson made his debut as a Dodger. He became the very first African American baseball player. He was an incrediblyskilled ballplayer and he broke the color barrier in the country’s marquis sport with dignity and class in an oftentimes hostile fan environment. It was his play in the field that ultimately silenced his critics. He earned Rookie Of The Year and he bec...ame the first black player to win the National League Most Valuable Player award in 1949. Jackie Robinson continued to champion the cause of civil rights after he left baseball. Jesse Jackson declared in his eulogy, When Jackie took the field, something reminded us of our birthright to be free. Both on and off the field he was an advocate as well as a role model, he was a great man with enormous amounts of courage and pride. I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking meAll I ask is that you respect me as a human being

As we continue our celebration of Black History month, this Friday we honor Stevie Wonder. American musical genius and former child prodigy. His work turned him into one of the most successful and popular figures in the history of music. Because he was born six weeks premature, Wonder suffered from an eye disorder called retinopathy of prematurity. The condition caused the retinas to detach, leading to blindness. The singer showed an early passion for music. He used to sing i...n his church choir and by 10 years old, he taught himself to play instruments such as the harmonica, piano and drums. In addition to his music, Wonder is also an activist for civil rights and a humanitarian. He used music to tackle social issues, raise money for different causes and encouraged people to love and respect one another. Always, there was love. With Wonder, black love was nurturing and empowering, a continuous source of validation and strength. In support of making Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a national holiday, Wonder released "Happy Birthday" a song celebrating Dr. King. On Monday, January 20, 1986, in cities and towns across the country people celebrated the first official Martin Luther King Day, the only federal holiday commemorating an African-American. We know the key to unity all people, is in the dream that you had so long ago, that lives in all of the hearts of people, that believe in unity, we’ll make that dream become a reality, I know we will, because our hearts tell us so See more

Here’s a little #throwbackthursday for y’all from January! 1888 Mills was able to make a large donation to our fire department right here in Griffin, Ga. The towels will be used from everyday station and truck maintenance to rescues and recovery. We are super grateful to be able to give to the men and women of Spaulding County serving and saving lives on a daily basis. What a great way to start off our year and having the honor to fulfill our purpose of #weavingabetterworld in our community!
