In "Constitution to Civil War, the ninth graders spent the first week studying the history of the United States government before the Constitutional Convention. Students considered how the different experiences under the British colonial government, as well as under the Articles of Confederation, shaped the framers' later debates over the role of government. We love seeing the enthusiasm from our students as they hosted their own debate over issues including: the power of the executive, how to represent states in congress, and how to elect a president.
Parents: Please join us for the Parent Coffee this Friday at 8:30am. You'll receive an email with the Zoom link to join!
Academe has had honeybee hives on campus since the school’s founding in 2003. The bees are managed naturally: Beneficial nematodes are applied under the hives to manage hive beetle populations, and powdered sugar dusting combats varroa mites. When it is necessary to feed the bees with a sugar water solution, the solution is prepared with organic thyme and chamomile. Academe harvests honey every year but ensures that sufficient honey is left in the hives for the bees’ use over the winter months. We're getting ready for our bees this spring and can't wait to share photos of students who help make this possible! Don't forget: the TARA Beekeepers meet virtually every month and the meetings are open to attend!
During J-Term, students stay up to date on current issues and trends such as: the election process in the U.S., refugee crisis, and exploring race, bias, and identity. Last month, we had guest speaker Dr. Kyler J. Sherman-Wilkins, an Assistant Professor at Missouri State University-Department of Sociology and Anthropology, visit. Dr. Sherman-Wilkins explored issues with race, bias and identity in our country. The students enjoyed participating in the conversation and were very grateful for Dr. Kyler's insight!
In Comparative Religion, we have been exploring the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), as well as Hinduism and other major religions that have arisen from it including Buddhism and Jainism. We have had some really amazing guest speakers along the way. Learning about other religions is in integral part of understanding other people and other societies. Yet another way we are #RedefiningHighSchool
#TakeTuesday: So often our parents and students remark about the deep connections within our community. Having a small student body fosters these relationships and cultivates a life-long love for learning. Learn more: academeatlanta.org
"It's a connection that you can't get anywhere else." "Learning is collaborative. Our community is so strong." "Our class is like a tight-knit family."... "The teachers are really great and so perceptive." "Academe cares about every individual student." What makes Academe so special? Listen to what our students had to say. #AcademeExcellence
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or another holiday, do it with kindness, a giving heart, and love. We wish you all a very happy holiday season!
Students are at the heart of Academe’s environmental initiatives. They oversee the school’s energy and water usage and organize recycling and waste management programs, including waste-free days and a robust composting program. Our organic vegetable garden and pollinator garden are cared for year-round by our community.
Social distancing, masks, hand washing stations, constant monitoring, research, implementation of our hybrid learning model... these are just a few of the ways that we have kept our classrooms, teachers, and students safe. We know that now is the time to help our students develop a sense of agency, resiliency, and leadership.
Holiday Break has begun! We will see you all back on Tuesday, January 5th. Have a wonderful, safe holiday!
One of the many qualities that we instill in our students in that of kindness. We rise by lifting others.
It's time for an Alumni Spotlight! Class of 2013 alum, Matthew Alston shares, "In a rapidly changing world, these are the skills that I believe will never stop serving me, and I owe a lot of the credit to Academe.
