June 19th, 1865 the day the last enslaved people in the United States found out they were freed. It took two years for news of the Emancipation Proclamation t...o reach the enslaved people of Texas - six months after the passing of the 13th Amendment of the Constitution - to finally end the institution of slavery. Today we celebrate this date as Juneteenth. Here in Savannah, Juneteenth has been officially celebrated since 2009 when The Daughters of Mary Magdalene began hosting a Juneteenth festival in Wells Park in the historic Cuyler-Brownville neighborhood. The festival was started as a way to bring people together for food and fellowship, to remember the progress America has made in combating racial injustice, and to look forward to the work that still needs to be done, a message still timely today. The City is in the midst of upgrading the 40-year-old lighting in Colonial Park Cemetery. It's a project replacing the 20 poles in the cemetery and adding five more to increase visibility and safety. Check out the details from cemeteries director Richard Gerbasi.
