Black History Month: Rangers in Action MASTER SERGEANT HOWARD (MAX) H. MULLEN MSG (Ret) Howard H. Max Mullen Jr. began his career as a Ranger in 1979 when he earned the coveted Black Beret with the 1st Battalion, 75th Infantry, at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. His career took him through many types of units and duty stations from mechanized to light Infantry all over the world from the Demilitarized Zone, 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea, to the 3rd Battalio...n 187th Infantry Regiment Rakkasans with the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. While assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Infantry at Fort Lewis, Washington he conducted a 500ft combat parachute assault into Grenada during Operation Urgent Fury. Later, MSG Mullen was assigned as a Ranger Instructor with Morgan Team Committee, 3rd Ranger Company, where he served as the lead Hand-to-Hand Combatives instructor, NCOIC of the Hand-to-Hand Demonstration Team, and the Primary Bayonet Instructor. While serving in this capacity, he conducted over 200 Hand-to-Hand Combatives demonstrations to Ranger students, visiting Dignitaries and General Officers. In 1987, MSG Mullen was assigned to the 4th Ranger Training Battalion, serving in Charlie Company as a Senior Ranger Instructor and Platoon Sergeant. He was recognized as a three-time Ranger Instructor of the cycle and a four-time Commander’s Blue Chip Award recipient. MSG Mullen was instrumental in co-authoring the U.S. Army Combatives Manual, FM 3-25.150. Upon his retirement in September 2002, MSG Mullen continued his service to the Army by taking a position as Operations Officer at Fort McPherson and Fort Benning, Georgia. Ranger Mullen was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame and as a Distinguished Member of the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade in 2013. Serving as a Ranger Instructor was the highlight of my military career. The opportunity to train and lead our country’s future warriors and leaders was a tremendous responsibility and blessing I will always cherish ~MSG (ret) Howard Max Mullen~

CH Knoedler, Brigade Chaplain, had the opportunity to baptize two of the graduates from Ranger Class 1-21. What a better location to do it than Victory Pond!
