Tattoo history... "La bella Angora", also called "Queen of the tattooed", was actually called Emma Schuster. She probably came from the Altmark in the north of Saxony-Anhalt, in Germany. There are several postcards and advertising cards on which "La bella Angora" is advertised as "The Old Market Beauty". There was a large breast eagle and a multi-jeweled necklace tattooed on her body. She was one of the few tattooed women whose feet were also tattooed. She claimed to have bee...n tattooed by savages in distant lands against her will. This claim contributed significantly to its enormous popularity. In reality, however, she was tattooed by the Hamburg tattoo artist Christoph Lein, later he moved to Erfurt / Thuringia. She has performed in Europe and overseas. It was commercially so successful that there are countless photos, postcards and advertising posters of it. The Münchner Allgemeine Zeitung wrote the following about its appearance at the Munich Oktoberfest 1891: "The skin of the pretty lady shines and feels like velvet; the nudity appears to be completely eliminated". "La bella Angora" was married to her impresario (manager) Julius Becker. He got tattooed in 1908 and appeared under the stage name "Don Manuelo". See more
