Halloween might look a little different this year. However you celebrate, don’t let your candy wrappers come back to haunt you. Dispose of your trash responsibly. #reconsiderlitter (: Beth Wolff)
Happy Halloween! Halloween is all about dressing up, having fun and candy lots of candy. But Halloween presents a scary reality for recycling facilities because of the huge amount of waste that’s produced and often wrongly placed in recycling bins. About 12,500 tons of Halloween costumes are sent to landfills every year, according to Real Simple magazine. To cut down on this waste, donate them, or save them for the kids to play dress-up throughout the year. ... Find out what can and cannot be recycled. Typically about 30 percent of what goes into residential recycling containers today shouldn’t be there. Halloween Recycling Tricks: Don’t put candy wrappers in your recycling bin. = Don’t trash costumes, donate. Don’t recycle face paint and makeup. Halloween Recycling Treats: Compost your jack-o’-lantern. Donate Halloween décor and toys. Recycle string lights at CHaRM.
We are pleased to announce that the ACC Solid Waste Department will be subject of a segment on Good Morning America (GMA) on Monday, November 2 between 7:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. (uncertain the exact time yet). The focus of the segment will be interviews with three of our female drivers, Beverly Gresham, Takisha Mapp and Miah Love. It is unusual to have this many female drivers in a Solid Waste/Sanitation Department. How did GMA find out about the Ladies in Solid Waste? Our GP...P student from last year, Daveon Montgomery, wrote an article about the ladies that was featured in Flagpole and GMA found that wonderful article. Check out Daveon’s article here - https://flagpole.com//meet-athens-first-three-female-tra/ It is rare for a local government solid waste department to receive this type of positive media attention from a prominent national media outlet. We invite you to watch GMA on Monday (or set your DVR) and support our Department and Athens. Lastly, I would like to thank the Solid Waste Department staff for all their hard work getting footage from co-workers, families and community members for this piece. We had NO idea how much additional work this would be but were happy to get it done. Specifically, Susan Lyon did most of the interview filming for GMA and our community member and solid waste fan, Axel Skobba.

In case you were wondering, NO!!!!! spearguns do not belong in our mixed recycling. Actually no weapons should go in the recycling. Luckily Jeremiah found these in our drop site bins BEFORE they made it to our recycling center. These could have been extremely dangerous at our facility. They could go in our scrap metal recycling available at the CHaRM or the landfill. Please, if you are ever unsure about an item being accepted in our recycling call 706-613-3501 or email [email protected]. Remember, safety first!
