Even after what would’ve been an accomplished career by any measure, Hal Holbrook continued acting and starred in one of my favorite movies ever, That Evening S...un which was a huge hit and winner of the 2009 Atlanta Film Festival and was written and directed by the talented Scott Teems. While Holbrook is remarkable in this film, the best tribute to him is another film by Teems, Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey (which played in the 2015 ATLFF) which not only really shows him for the incredible artist he was, but the cost of being that dedicated to craft, what a nations treasure Hal Halbrook was (not just for his talent but his expertise on another, Mark Twain, and how he was able to bring him to life). It’s possibly one of the best tributes to anyone ever. We lost Hal Holbrook today but his art lives on. If you’d like to celebrate him, or know why he was such an incredible talent, watch either of this films. I may see if we can screen one or two of them at the Plaza Atlanta but Holbrook/Twain is available most everywhere (Amazon, Apple, etc.), That Evening Sun is currently available on Vimeo on Demand.
