Habitat for Humanity continues to remain focused on the global need for safe and affordable housing, particularly for women-led households. So, we’re calling on all #WomenBuild volunteers, supporters, donors, homeowners and community residents to take collective action in helping us ensure that no family has to pay anywhere near half their paycheck for housing. Find out how you can act now for affordable housing here: bit.ly/COHATLHabitat #CostOfHome
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a prominent leader in the civil rights movement, who went on to become one of the youngest people to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment to achieving racial justice through non-violent action. While "The Beloved Community" was first coined by philosopher-theologian Josiah Royce, it was Dr. King who made the term popular and added a deeper meaning that continues to resonate with the world today - especially those who serve in the af...fordable housing sector. As stated by The King Center: "In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood." Dr. King's vision of a Beloved Community fuels Habitat's work and continues to propel our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. #AtlantaHabitatxBHM
Today, Habitat for Humanity is kicking off its first virtual legislative conference, where hundreds of Habitat staff, homeowners, volunteers, partners and supporters from around the country will unite as advocates for safe and affordable housing. Without the constraints of a physical space, this year’s conference will welcome new and seasoned advocates alike to address the underlying policies and systems that hinder access to housing. www.habitat.org/about/advocacy/habitat-on-the-hill #HabitatOnTheHill
In the spirit of #BlackHistoryMonth, we highlight Lisa Y. Gordon, our own history-making President and CEO! Lisa is Atlanta Habitat’s first African American CEO. Like so many African Americans who have made a difference in our community, she has ignited explosive organizational growth, serving more families year-over-year. During Lisa’s tenure with Atlanta Habitat, she has helped bring attention to and address Atlanta’s housing affordability crisis. Additionally, Lisa was the first African-American woman to serve as City Manager of East Point and chair the Urban Land Institute. ULI is a prestigious global network of cross-disciplinary real estate and land-use experts. Happy Birthday, Lisa! #AtlantaHabitatxBHM

Atlanta Habitat CEO Lisa Y. Gordon: This year has shown us that more than ever, home matters as does your voice and vote. There are two local questions on this year’s ballot that address affordable homeownership. Georgia House Bill 344 (Act No.149) exempts nonprofits like ours from paying property taxes on lots slated for affordable home construction. This type of tax savings will help keep the #CostOfHome affordable for families. Read the full statement from our CEO here: bit.ly/ATLHabitatVote
