Adding beauty to your yard can be expensive but it doesn't have to break the bank! Here are some ideas for some budget-friendly improvements! 1. Free Mulch: You probably have access to free mulch without even knowing it! Most cities collect fallen branches and old Christmas trees and chop them up, providing the mulch free to the public! You could also use leaves, grass clippings, and even old newspapers as mulch! 2. Plant Perennials: Perennials are a great low-cost investment... because with proper care they can return for up to 20 years! The initial cost is a little more, but over time they'll pay for themselves! 3. Repurpose Old Tires: Tires can make a surprisingly attractive addition to a yard. Cover them with pillowcases to create an outdoor ottoman, or use them as planters. For an extra rustic touch, hang one from a tree like a tire swing, but use the lower half of the tire to plant flowers! 4. Buy Low-Cost Seating: With a little waterproof sealant, old interior seating at thrift stores or left on the side of the road can often be reused as outdoor seating. Seating can also be built out of old pallets or even by attaching cushions atop an old tree stump. 5. Make Your Own Stepping Stones: Store-bought stones can be expensive and that cost can add up quickly, but with not much more than some cement, a bucket, and a ruler, you can create your own stones and place them yourself! Remember, yard improvements don't have to break the bank!
So you're building your fence, you've measured the tops of your posts and ordered your post caps to protect the wood grain from the elements, but first thing's first...getting the posts in the ground! How Deep Should They Go? The depth of the hole should be 1/3-1/2 the post height above ground so for example, a 6-foot tall fence would require a hole depth of at least 2 feet. How do I Line Up The Posts? Step 1 Clear the Fence Line. Remove any vegetation in the path of the fenc...e. ...Step 2 Mark the Corners. ...Step 3 Make Batter Boards.(temporary frames, set beyond the corners of a planned foundation at precise elevations, used to hold layout lines) ...Step 4 Align the First Batter Board. ...Step 5 Square the Corners. ...Step 6 Set Stakes to Mark Posts. ...Step 7 Align Posts with the String or Laser. How Do I Keep the Wood From Rotting Above the Concrete? Caulk it! Specifically around the fence post base using high-quality exterior acrylic caulk, or silicone specifically designed to adhere to concrete, at the base of the post. What if I Don't Want to Use Concrete? If you have clay-heavy soil, you CAN use gravel...but concrete is the only thing that will truly keep your fence posts stuck in place. Remember, good fences start with good foundations.
If you frequently host lots of outdoor parties with many guests, you may want consider installing a fire pit that matches your existing patio. That said, if your fire pit will mostly be enjoyed by you and your family, or if you prefer a more rustic look, a modern fire pit built out of retaining wall blocks or a time saving fire pit project kit may be ideal. Either way, a fire pit is the ultimate way for you and your guests to safely gather around an outdoor fire year after ye...ar. Metal fire pits can be purchased and placed and are pretty much complete right out of the box, but you can also construct your own fairly cheaply by basically using paver blocks to create a floor and then a barrier by stacking them in a circle. This technique can cost less than $60!!! For all the fun they can create, fire pits are a cheap investment into your backyard experience. Now get out there and start making memories!

So you've upgraded your wooden fence and it looks great but there's a problem. You've got all these old fence boards lying around! Here's some ideas on how to repurpose that wood so it doesn't go to waste! Fence Post Welcome Sign: Pretty self-explanatory, simply take a post and slap a nice artsy welcome sign on it, DONE! Bed Headboard: An idea that's a little more outside the box is using a small fence section to create your own custom headboard!... Marble Fence: The steps are simple...drill holes, insert marbles. These look great but beware, the added holes make the boards more vulnerable to water damage. Fence-Side-Table: Use some of the old boards to make a lean-too type table that attaches right to the side of the new fence! Air Conditioner Cover: Using panels to cover your AC unit will both add to the home's appearance and protect the unit from damage caused by dogs marking their territory. We hope these ideas help spark your imagination!

Looking for the perfect way to wind down in the evening regardless of if the snow is coming down or if it's a warm summer night? How about an outdoor hot tub? You'll want to consider more than the initial cost...between permits and maintenance you are looking at around $15,000 but there ARE many health benefits to soaking in a hot tub. In fact, a study from Loughborough University showed that it has similar benefits to exercise.... Just something to consider as you plan your perfect back yard!
If anyone doesn't already know, the Gwinnett County Public School system is running school buses to give out free lunches to anyone under 18 in the county. (I understand many school systems are doing this) Our driver said that they gave out so few last week that they had to throw a bunch away.
