Great fun at the ASC for summer camp!

Augusta Sailing Club 04.10.2020

Sail camp registration is re-opened!! It was temporarily closed as we assessed the COVID-19 situation and made necessary changes to protect our campers and staff. We are super excited to be able to offer camp this summer. Even though Adventure Sailing is completely full, we still have spots available for our half-day Open Skiff and 420 camps. Hope to see you soon!! https://sites.google.com//ascjunio/ascjuniors/summer-camp

We will hold the 66th annual Castleberry-Robertson Regatta on Clarks Hill Lake on Memorial Day Weekend. Over 35 Sailboats will be racing on Clarks Hill Lake this weekend to compete for the prestigious Castleberry Cup and Commodore’s Cup trophies. The regatta will consist of 3-5 races over the two day regatta. The Castleberry-Robertson Regatta was first held in 1955. It is an annual event organized by the Augusta Sailing Club to honor two of their founding members, Clem Castle...berry and Jim Robertson. Sailboats in several classes, from scows to classic dinghies, will be competing for the Castleberry Cup.They will be scored using a time on time handicapped format that allows the sailors to compete in different boats. Registered classes include Lasers, 29ers, Lightnings, Sunfish, MC Scows, C Scows, Coronado 15’s, and O’pen Skiffs. Racers will also be scored against each other in one design racing divisions where all sailors compete in the same boat type and the winners are determined by order of finish. Whoever completes the racecourse first wins. Almost half of the sailors racing are kids. Juniors as young as nine years old will be competing in all classes, especially Laser Radial and O’pen Skiff. Lasers are an Olympic class and some of these young sailors may be destined for gold. The O’pen Skiff is a small, fast boat with a modern, carbon rig and Mylar sails. It was designed specifically for kids and is a machine for real excitement on the water. This is a rapidly growing international class, with 10,000 boats worldwide. Races will be held just above the dam beginning at noon on Saturday and Sunday. Races usually last an hour and there will be two or three races each day depending on weather and wind conditions. The best place for public viewing from shore is from Lake Springs or West Dam recreation areas on the Georgia side and the visitor center or Hamilton Branch on the South Carolina side. Spectators on the water are welcome, keeping in mind that powerboats should keep well clear of racing sailboats. To register to race, sign up for sail camp, or to take sailing lessons, visit the website at www.augustasailingclub.com. Registration must be completed prior to racing. COVID rules are in effect, so the competitor’s meeting will be held via Zoom on Friday evening. The Augusta Sailing Club is a local non-profit organization 501c(7) established to promote sailing, to hold regattas and races and to provide a place for its members and their guests. Since 1953, ASC has provided a convenient family oriented setting for the enjoyment of sailing as recreation, as well as promoting the sport of sailing and the development of sailors of all ages

It’s happening!!!!! Our annual Castleberry-Robertson Regatta - Saturday and Sunday, May 23 & 24! Have we tweaked this event a bit? We have, but our focus is on running great races, and making the courses as normal’ as possible. We think you’ll be pleased! Post-race, we will break out the beverages, fire up the grills (bring whatever you wish to cook), and celebrate together - safely! (Clubhouse will remain locked, but restrooms will be open.)... And if you’ll be sporting a mask, make it exotic, colorful, glitzy or daring, and strut your stuff! Racing begins at 12:00 noon both days, with a virtual competitors meeting on Friday May 22, 6:30 pm on the Zoom platform. For more details, and to register, visit our website: augustasailingclub.com, log in, and select this event from the calendar section on the lefthand side of the page. See you there! See more
