Did you know that we only make so much enzyme (alcohol dehydrogenase) to break down a certain amount of alcohol in any 24 hour period? On average, men can break down the equivalent of 2 drinks in a 24 hour period, women can break down one drink. What is one drink? A standard drink contains 14 grams of alcohol, so one drink is 12 oz beer or cooler or 8.5 oz malt liquor or 5 oz table wine or 2.5 oz cordial, liqueur or aperitif or 1.5 oz brandy or spirits (gin, whiskey, vod...ka, etc.). What is not broken down is toxic (intoxication). What are the consequences of multiple intoxications? How many is not know but overall studies have shown that it increases our risk of heart arrhythmias (irregular beats) which increase our risk of strokes, of many cancers including liver, stomach, esophageal, colon and breast cancers, of liver and pancreatic disease, of osteoporosis and diabetes, of violence, suicide and accidents, and of faster long term cognitive decline. So if you drink more than 1 drink (women) or 2 (men) per day, decrease now to preserve your health. If you can’t cut down to this, contact your doctor for help, or call Dr. Marilyn Lavallée at Avalon Health at 912-999-8899. See more

Did you know that laughter is the best medicine - or one of the best? According to Psychology Today, laughter reduces pain, increases job performance, connects people emotionally, and improves the flow of oxygen to the heart and brain. So find a friend who makes you laugh, read some jokes or watch a funny movie. This is highly recommended by Dr. Marilyn Lavallée, at www.AvalonHealth.Care.

Did you know - that many people suffer from poor sleep. You don't have to - and shouldn't. Driving while chronically sleepy is not unlike driving while over the legal alcohol limit. Chronic insomnia can also lead to difficulty with job performance, relationships and daily function. It can also lead to anxiety and depression, as well as a decrease in overall health. Any insomnia lasting more than 3 months should be investigated as to the cause so that it may be eliminated or treated. For more information and for help, call Avalon Health at 912-999-8899.

Did you know that colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. The risk increases with age and with family history. The best screening method is a colonoscopy where if a polyp is found, it can be removed during the procedure. A good prep is essential. You are sedated during the procedure so you will not feel pain or remember the procedure. Get a colonoscopy starting at age 50, or the age of the family member who had colon cancer minus 10 years. For instance, if your mother had colon cancer diagnosed at age 54, you should have your first screening at age 44. Remember, a colonoscopist has performed thousands of these procedures - they have no interest in judging your backside. So go already!

Did you know ... that 5%-10% of all female breast cancers and 5%-20% of male breast cancers are inherited? What does this mean? Turn this around and you will see that over 90% of female breast cancers and over 80% of male breast cancers are NOT inherited. So women - don't tell yourself that because you have no family history of breast cancer that you are not at risk. Get a yearly mammogram starting at age 40. And men - periodically check for breast lumps. 1% of breast cancers are in men.
