Barrow County Museum

Confirmation class members from First United Methodist Church in Winder toured the Barrow County Museum as a part of their educational experience. Museum Volunteer Butch Kennedy, who is a member and historian of the church, guided the guests through the museum for a special tour.

The hospital auxiliary formed in 1982 -- a short time before a new medical facility was constructed at 316 N. Broad St., in Winder, -- is featured in a museum special exhibit for January 2020. The auxiliary operated the gift shop and generated thousands of dollars used to support the hospital and its patients as well as provide scholarships to high school grads pursuing medical-related careers. The auxiliary also supported Relay for Life, the American Red Cross and its blood drives and other organizations.

Give a gift of local history: Fort Yargo. In celebration of its 50th anniversary during our nation’s Bicentennial year of 1976, The Peoples Bank, which was chartered in 1926, commissioned artist James R. Darnell to create a limited edition lithograph of the historic blockhouse from which Fort Yargo State Park derives its name. A total of 990 prints were made available. Darnell, a talented artist who is well-known for his nature works particularly animals, died in 2011. A limited number of prints are available at the Barrow County Museum.
