This week on construction corner: Shingles. The humble shingle is something that most of us think about very rarely if ever, until they fail. Shingles are made by coating a felt or fiberglass mat in asphalt and then cutting them into shape for use in roofing. There are two main types of asphalt shingles, three tab and architectural. There are a variety of differences between the two including lifespan, wind rating, and look. Three tab shingles have a shorter lifespan (usuall...y between 12-15 years), a lower wind rating(usually around 60 mph) and have a flat look when installed. Architectural shingles on the other hand have a longer lifespan (usually 18-20 years), a higher wind rating (80-120 mph) and a more 3-dimensional look when installed.
