Howdy folks......Darren here with Visit Downtown Blairsville. I'd like to give y'all an update on what is & isn't going on in Downtown Blairsville over the nex...t few months. As many of you are aware, we're still experiencing a record number of Covid cases in our community and that creates some unique challenges when it comes to hosting our usual annual events. For starters, I would like to remind y'all that Taste of the Mountains Food Festival, which would usually take place on Saturday, September 18 has been cancelled. With restaurants struggling to maintain staffing, as well as this being one of the busiest tourist seasons we've ever experienced, it's simply too much to ask area restaurants to stretch themselves even thinner. We'll try again next year in hopes that things will have settled down by then. The Sorghum Festival is still ON for both weekends in October! (2nd & 3rd weekends in October) However, the City has decided that both the parade and square dance be cancelled. Halloween on the Square will NOT take place again this year, however, our friends at Lake Nottely Marina will be hosting a 3-night event at their place, which we greatly appreciate. Speaking of which, they're looking for candy donations......hit them up if you're willing to help out. On a personal note, Halloween on the Square is one of my favorite events, and like y'all, I'm bummed it won't happen this year. Please keep in mind that the City of Blairsville's leadership is taking a very cautious approach to events that draw large crowds. All of us, including the Mayor & City Council, would like to see things return to 'normal'.....we just aren't there quite yet. And if you're like me.....you probably know someone who's been negatively impacted by the virus or worse yet, have lost someone dear to you. My point is that in times like these, the wellbeing of our families, friends, coworkers and volunteers is a major consideration in deciding not to host events where large crowds tend to be. So I hope that you'll be understanding as we once again are faced with cancelling events for the time being. Biden wants to get rid of something called "stepped up basis"??? How does this affect you!? When your parents pass and leave you the family house normally you... would inherit that property at what it is worth today. If you were to sell that house you would only pay taxes on the gain from what it is worth today and what it sells for. If Biden does away with "stepped up basis" you will inherit the property for what your parents paid for the property. If you decide to sell you will pay taxes on the difference between the original purchase price and what it sells for today. Our kids need to be aware. Here is what this looks like! Current Policy Inherited House at Current Value - $200,000 Sells for $205,000 Taxable income = $5000 Taxes Due - 20% of $5000 = $1000 Profit to you = $204,000 Biden Policy Inherited House at original purchase price - $40,000 Sells for $205,000 Taxable income = $165,000 Taxes Due - 20% of $165,000 = $33,000 Profit to you = $172,000 If your parent were to have sold this property prior to passing they would have paid no taxes because it was their primary residence. So much for helping the middle class get ahead. ***My educated guess would be that at least 95% of Americans don’t even know Biden has proposed this. We are talking tens of thousands of more tax dollars for the average sold after inheritance! This is our favorite restaurant in North Georgia! We stopped in today after our visit to Vogel State Park. Everything was amazing!!! My kids think it’s the B...EST pizza ever. I had the wings and salad and it was so delicious! Make plans to visit! Even if it is out of the way, you won’t regret it! See more
