The Baldwin Angel is unlike any of the other ladies at Bonaventure. The graves of George Johnson Baldwin and his wife, Lucy Harvie Baldwin, rest in front of her. Perhaps, the reason they chose a little girl was to emphasize the importance of having a child-like faith. In Christian iconography the seashell, and more specifically the scallop, is a symbol for Baptism. Sometimes people leave flowers in the shell. The rain held off and gave our tour the perfect ambiance for the view of the cemetery. Great example today of how many families have their headstones prepared with the name of the family member, their date of birth, but no date of death. Many headstones are seen with no date of death because that love one is still alive and well. At the time of death the surviving family members will have the date of death engraved.
