Back in December, our FIND Outdoors Georgia program manager Liberti arranged a giving month for 2 no-kill animal shelters in Georgia that were affected by the pandemic. FIND staff at both Brasstown Bald and Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Areas arranged for donations to be collected for the agencies throughout the month of December, with FIND matching the total amount for both sites. We plan to make this an annual campaign, supporting these agencies and others to care for animals in the community. #FINDoutdoors
Located in the Chattahoochee - Oconee National Forest, Brasstown Bald is within a U.S. Forest Service managed area of 867,000 acres spanning 26 counties, miles of clear streams and rivers, nearly 850 miles of recreation trails, and dozens of campgrounds, picnic areas, and other recreation opportunities. It's a truly special part of our country's heritage and is preserved for generations to enjoy and recreate responsibly.
It's about that time to see our slithery friends re-emerge! As Georgia begins to warm up reptiles will begin to come out of brumation, which is a state similar to hibernation. Did you know snakes will slow down their metabolism and go through a period of dormancy during the winter months when food sources are scarce? As temperatures increase snakes will become more active and you will be able to see these cold-blooded animals basking on rocks, roads, and any place where the sun shines. The flora and fauna is beginning to show up around Brasstown Bald. During your next visit, be on the lookout for the Cope's Gray Tree Frog: The Cope's gray tree from is one of Georgia's many native amphibians. This March you may hear these frogs calling for their mates as they begin calling for mates now and finish breeding in August. The Cope's grey tree frog is a small grey to white frog with a black marbled pattern over its body. These frogs are mainly nocturnal and if you are wanting to hear them, stay up late and listen out for a high pitch buzzing or purring sound .
