Since March, I estimate that I've entered the hospital rooms of patients with COVID-19 on 250 occasions. Some of those patients have been quite ill, coughing vi...olently and receiving nebulizers and high-flow oxygen. Colleagues of mine, particularly nurses, have interacted with these patients much, much more. I'm 51 years old and blessed with good health, but my immune system is no better than normal. I get my share of viral illnesses just like everyone else. To date (knock on wood) I haven't contracted COVID-19 illness. At my hospital in Philadelphia, which suffered a significant burden of COVID-19 illness, less than 1% of staff has contracted the illness. This is less than the infection rate of the general public. How are we literally bathing in air thick with COVID-19 and not catching it? It’s not magic, my friends; it’s masks and hand hygiene. Do you want the economy to reopen? Wear a mask and wash your hands. Do you want your kids to go to school in September? Wear a mask and wash your hands. Do you want to eventually go to a concert? Wear a mask and wash your hands. I’ve spent a lot of time explaining the science behind mask wearing. If that moves you, check it out in COVID-19 Fact of the Day, starting on page 27 (link below). If not, simply ask yourself, why are some people who are highly exposed to this virus not infected after four months? The answer is not rocket science (or even brain surgery). It’s hand hygiene and masking. Do your part. COVID-19 Fact of the Day Collection: https://www.dropbox.com//COVID-19%20Fact%20of%20the%20Day%
We at the Children's Eye Institute of Savannah hope that everyone is staying safe as we (hopefully) slowly return to the "new normal." We are slowly and cautiously expanding our hours of operation and have begun offering elective surgery when safe and appropriate. All persons over 2 years of age are required to wear masks in the office and we are currently holding to the one parent/one child rule for appointments. We look forward to seeing you soon and consider it a privilege to participate in the eye care of your children. Please see the attached recent post from the American Academy of Ophthalmology: http://www.aao.org//your-ophthalmologist-is-ready-to-see-y
Due to Hurricane Dorian our office will be closed Tuesday through Thursday, September 3-5, 2019. We hope to re-open on Friday September 6, 2019. We will update this information as it becomes available. Everyone stay safe!!
In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has recommended that all eye care providers temporarily suspend routine eye examinations to minimize spread of the disease. As we continue to monitor updates from the CDC and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, we have decided the following: All routine visits and elective surgeries will need to be rescheduled for the time being. We have also instituted telemedicine protocols for those patien...ts where it may be appropriate and beneficial. We will be calling patients next week to begin this process. The office will be open from 10am to 12pm Monday - Friday. If you are an established patient in our practice and feel that you need to be seen by one of our physicians, please contact the office and an assessment will be made as to whether you need to come to the office for evaluation and treatment or whether a telemedicine conference may be appropriate. Please call us before coming to the office. Our commitment during these uncertain times is the health and well-being of our staff, patients and the community at large. We hope that we all can return to normal office hours in the very near future. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
We hope that everyone did okay with our little storm. We wish Dorian farewell! The Children's Eye Institute will be open for business on Friday 9/6/19 at 830 am. See you then!
