A quick update to our progress at the parks! New signage installed at Mathews Park...on the reverse side (shadows and the sun didn’t work out for a quality picture) is a plaque explaining the history of the park and its beginning back in 1974 thanks to a former Mayor, Dr. Mathews! While some minor improvements have taken place over the past few weeks and months, the installation of new play equipment begins this coming week, and final designs for the new restroom facility are in process and we hope in place by the end of the year! There are several other components that will be done at the park later this year and early in 2021. We look forward to continuing our efforts to rebuild our parks system!

During this time of year with its earlier nights, low-angle sun, and long shadows, please slow down and drive aware for the safety of the many pedestrians out and about in Downtown and elsewhere in the city. A little patience can go a long way. Pedestrians; please walk and cross streets with awareness as well. Be safe and have fun in beautiful Downtown Monroe!

The City is aware of areas without power, currently on the eastern side of town. High wind activity may hinder electric crew members from bucket truck work until winds calm. Crews will work to restore power as soon as possible. Please watch for and stay clear of any downed power lines!

The City of Monroe will begin regular routes of roadside leaf collection on November 1st with those routes ending January 31st. The route schedule will follow the current residential trash collection scheduleso if you have trash collection on a Monday, the planned route for leaf collection will also be on a Monday, and so on. Keep in mind, as leaves fall more heavily this schedule may see some delays, but we will get to your area as soon as possible on the route schedule. We... expect to have both a leaf vacuum truck and leaf vacuum trailer (upon arrival) running routes this season, along with our street sweeper operating to keep curbing and gutters clean throughout the season. This leaf season, our Central Services, Solid Waste, Stormwater, and Streets crews will be working jointly to keep curbs, drains, and sidewalks free of leaf debris and help the collection process go as smoothly as possible. Keep in mind, this process works as fluidly as both the weather and equipment operability allow! We ask that residents place their leaves very near the edge of the roadside but not in the travel lane, in or near drainage ditches, inlets, or any other utility pedestals or meter boxes. Also, keep from placing other debris in with the collection piles of leaves as this may cause damage to equipment upon collection. Following these simple guidelines for the placement of collection piles will drastically assist our crews in the collection process and help to eliminate the amount of debris that reaches our streets and storm drainage systems!
