"I will not be commanded. I will not be controlled. And I will not let my future go on without the help of my soul." I was reminded recently in another FB post of a very powerful principle about personal empowerment and here it is: Often times, those we think we are supposed to or should be able to count on the most for respect, esteem, acceptance, love, support, etc, (namely our parents, family members, or intimate partners) fail us, either when we are young or old. We ...react to this failure on their part with moments, weeks, or years of disappointment, resentment, anger, hate, blaming, shaming, distance, judgement, criticism, etc. Yet, these human beings were not and could not be available for us when we needed them because they were unavailable to themselves and for the values we craved to see demonstrated. We can stay stuck in the space that judges and blames them or, we can shift our perspective to understanding and allowance for their imperfect humanness, as we seek and desire for allowance and understanding from others for our own imperfections. Here’s the key: when we realize that we can only give ourselves what we were looking for from them anyway (respect, esteem, acceptance, love, etc), we can then begin to empower ourselves and look for a new tribe or people who ARE available to mentor, support, encourage and join us along our path. This journey finally brings us the peace, forgiveness, and freedom we’ve been searching for so long. Onward. Here is the perfect song to go along with this thought.
