As you are aware, the arrival of COVID-19/Coronavirus in Georgia has necessitated social distancing measures based upon Centers for Disease Control recommendations. You have probably seen how industries across the U.S. are adjusting to continue to provide services while reducing the spread of the virus. The legal industry is no exception. The Supreme Court of the State of Georgia issued an Order Declaring Statewide Judicial Emergency, which limits the courts of our state to... essential functions. The practical effect this will have on civil litigation is that each case will be paused from the Court’s perspective until , (unless extended by the Supreme Court). This includes civil trials, hearing dates, statutes of limitation, discovery deadlines, appeal deadlines, and more. The primary exception to the emergency order in the civil arena will be for cases involving domestic violence. , ' . Although the emergency order has suspended certain deadlines and court dates, our office will remain open and we will continue to prepare your matter for resolution to the extent permissible. However, in light of the emergency order and our obligations to the safety of the community, we are implementing our own interim policies to reduce face-to-face interactions in our office beyond what is necessary to meet your needs. For the time being, our policy will be to conduct meetings by video- or tele-conference unless face-to-face meetings are critical to an issue in your case.
