Dalton Civitan Club 04.04.2021

Did you know the Dalton Civitan Club: -is the oldest civic club in Dalton, chartered on July 28, 1921, the club was organized by a group of 50 "forward-looking individuals who felt the need to solidify the spirit of Dalton into a working force for the betterment of Dalton and mankind" wrote past President and past Civitan Governor James "Jimmy" Clark in a July 18, 2001 article in The Daily Citizen. -built Hotel Dalton, now known as the Landmark Building, and on July 13, 1923..., the first Civitan meeting was held in the building. -In the 1920's, Civitan member Floyd Farrar, on behalf of the club, wrote to all of the textile mills in New England and invited them to move to Dalton. The American Thread Company responded to the letter and built a plant in Dalton, beginning the industrialization of the city. -organized the Dalton Chamber of Commerce. The Civitan club printed the first chamber newsletter -bought land on West Crawford Street and gave it to Dalton High School for a football field. The field is known as Harmon Field. -after World War I, the Hamilton Memorial Hospital had to close for 8 months. The Civitan Club leased and eventually bought the hospital. The hospital was re-opened, making it the only hospital in the country owned by a civic club, it was then turned over to a new hospital group in 1954. -the Civitan airport committee bought land for the Dalton Airport, it was sold to the city of Dalton at cost. -Harlan Godfrey Civitan Park was donated to the city by a Civitan member for a park that the citizens of Dalton can enjoy. Additionally, the Civitan Club gave $20,000 investment to the city of Dalton for the park. The 7-acre park is the busiest park in Dalton. These are just a few of the accomplishments the club has achieved in the last 98 years. Currently, the Club is raising funds for a new park at the old chamber of commerce site. The new park will open in the fall of 2019. The Dalton Civitan Club meets at the Dalton Golf and Country Club on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month at noon. All are welcome! We are actively seeking new members to carry on the club's outstanding legacy! Email Heath Patterson at [email protected] or call 226-1234 for membership opportunities (excerpts from this post were taken from the July 18, 2001, Daily Citizen)
