Tuesday, Tomorrow, Yesterday. 1 Phrase 5 Ways is a dance film experiment conceptualized by dance major Jodie Jernigan @jodiejernigan and facilitated through the freshman and sophomore practicum classes. Dancers in the department worked... independently to elaborate and expand upon phrase work choreographed by dancers Amit Katz and Claire Wright. The films students produced were all inspired by the same choreographic phrases, but as each student incorporated their own style, the phrase work took on varying aesthetics. As the film project expanded across the department, the title 1 Phrase 5 Ways no longer fit the expansive scope of the project as the 12 freshman students worked off of the same phrase by Claire Wright and the 6 sophomore students were able to choose between two phrases by Amit Katz. Description of motif from Rianna: I filmed the video over two days, Tuesday and Wednesday. I walked around the campus and discovered areas that spoke to me. In Claire‘s words The space was enormous and there wasn’t a single car in the entire lot, so I wanted to take advantage of it with the camera. I had Olivia (my videographer and fellow dance student) fill me from far away and then walk toward me faster and faster until she was right near me. Today’s post is of Zoë Metelerkamp, an international student from South Africa. Zoë recalls: This is a photo of me in one of my ballet classes when I was about five years old. We were preparing for my very first ballet exam and my teacher promised me that if I worked really hard in his class, he would put on music at the end and we could make up our own dances.
