A TRUE STORY OF RESILIENCE - This is a picture of my dad in Korea. He was drafted into the Army right out of high school and sent to fight in Korea shortly afterwards. Thankfully he did not suffer with much psychological trauma from combat, but he was traumatized by the racist treatment he received from other soldiers who served with him. He told me multiple times about how he would share a foxhole with a White comrade when they were fighting in Korea and how those same peopl...e ignored him when they were sailing into Seattle, WA because they were entering back into a land that held them at a much higher regard than they did a Black man. . . . People often talk about the stressors and traumas that people experience during their time in the military, but we rarely hear about the stories of the service men and women who also endured discrimination and blatant racism while serving their country. Those invisible wounds should also be acknowledged. It is hard to imagine the type of resilience that one must possess in order to deal with the typical stressors of the military culture, combat and racism, and to do it all with grace, like my father did. My dad is a true American hero!
