We are excited to announce Dunwoody Pediatrics is now offering in-office rapid testing as well as PCR testing (sent off-site) on established patients. Testing will only be performed if deemed necessary by the provider based on symptoms or exposure. We are also offering telehealth visits for eligible patients and can order testing to be performed at outside facilities. There are currently three types of Covid-19 tests available: PCR tests, antigen tests and antibody tests. The... PCR test is the most accurate test available. It looks for the virus's genetic material and results usually take a few days to come back. The antigen test, also known as the rapid test, gives results within minutes but is less sensitive and more likely to have inaccurate results. It looks for proteins on the virus’s surface. Finally, the antibody test tells you if you’ve already been infected with Covid-19 by showing if you have antibodies to the virus. It typically takes days to weeks to develop antibodies after an infection, and we do not know how long antibodies will last. It is also not yet clear what level of protection antibodies for Covid-19 have to protect you from future infection. We at Dunwoody Pediatrics thank you for working with us to keep our community safe. We understand this year has been difficult and we are here to support you and your family! As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions or concerns.

TEEN WELL CHECKS - SHOULD I CANCEL OR KEEP? Kathryn Bland, MSN, CPNP We at Dunwoody Pediatrics have seen a decrease in scheduled well checks during this pandemic. We know families are concerned about Covid 19 and some question if it is wise to keep office appointments. We want to assure you that we have safety measures in place to protect your family during visits, and emphasize the importance of continuing annual well checks. Well checks are necessary to monitor growth and d...evelopment during childhood and to give important routine vaccines. Teenagers who are done growing and up to date on immunizations are also encouraged to continue annual well checks, and during this pandemic these visits are arguably more important. We are seeing rates of anxiety and depression increasing among adolescents. Many teens are learning virtually and missing face-to-face interactions with their friends. They may not be participating in extracurriculars that previously gave them joy and exercise. They are likely not interacting with as many adults, like teachers, neighbors, school counselors, or church leaders as before. During well checks your teen will have time with their provider to talk about how they're coping with all of these changes. The provider can help them identify healthy ways to manage stress and find safe ways to socialize with their peers. Providers will also screen for mental health disorders and help connect your teen to resources in the community, like therapists or psychiatrists, if necessary. These visits are so valuable. Please schedule your child's well check today so we can best support your children and family during this difficult time. And please see the article listed below for further ways to support your teens mental health. https://www.cnn.com//teen-mental-health-pandemi/index.html
