"Our school days require time. Time to wonder. Time to pause, time to look closely, time to share.... Chip Wood
I loved studying these photographs and the children's encounters with putty. I specifically paid attention to the interactions of their hands and eyes and the strategies they used to understand this incredible material.
The best education does not happen at a desk, but rather engaged in everyday living hands on, exploring, in active relationship with life. ~ Vince Gowman
El Dia de los Muertos......... The Day of the Dead
The Highlander School first opened its doors sevens years ago today! It has been a beautiful and rich journey. We began with a simple story . I would like to think of the creation of The Highlander School as part of an ongoing story. A story that began as a dream for every child and citizen to live into his or her fullest potential. This optimism to leave the world better than we had found it was the inspiration for our name. The Highlander School draws on the legacy of ...the civil rights movement and honors the Highlander Folk School of Tennessee. Founded in 1932, to educate, empower and to create dialogue for social change, students such as Rosa Parks, John Lewis, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and many others flocked to the school to study and develop strategies for non-violent resistance to social injustices. Our hope and illuminating dream is that The Highlander School will embody this same spirit of freedom and cultivate a community of life long learners, thinkers, activists and innovators! This all remains true As we celebrate our history together, we would like to express our gratitude to our friends and supporters that have helped to keep our doors open This is a birthday cake for the Highlander School

‘Taking a closer look Scout: They are really big in the magnifying glass. Laylah: All of them are big, Scout. Scout: Well only when you put them in the magnifying glass. Ms. Jessica: Do you think all the cucumbers are the same size?... Laylah: No this is a big one. Scout: Yeah it’s really big. Ms. Jessica: Do you think they all look the same? Laylah: All of them don’t have the same dots, but some of them have the same dots. Scout: I see a pointed dot at the top. Ms. Jessica: What shape do you think the cucumbers look like? Scout: Oval! Laylah: It’s kind of look like an oval, because when they put the seed in they stand it up. When it got grown it looked like this. See more
Cucumbers from the garden..... Ms. Jessica: Where do you think those cucumbers came from? Beau: From the trees. Harper: Out of the garden. Ms. Jessica: Can you tell us how these cucumbers got in the garden?... Harper: People planted them by making holes and putting the seed inside, and then they covered it up with soil. They had to put water on it so it could grow. Laylah: They need sunlight too. See more
