The U.S.Department of Commece's Economic Development Administration awarded a $300K grant to Georgia Tech's EDA University Center to help businesses, communities, and economic development organizations across Georgia develop plans and find solutions to the economic challenges from #covid19. Last week, the U.S. Department of Commerce's U.S. Economic Development Administration awarded $2.5M to the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce to fund building of a new business incubator. The funding follows a four-month analysis project by Georgia Tech's EDA University Center that found the idea viable: https://b.gatech.edu/2JzMVKS

Earlier this month, Lynne Henkiel, director of our Innovation Ecosystems group (http://grow.gatech.edu), was in Concepción, Chile where she gave a presentation on taking NASA/space age technology through the process of becoming commercialized products and how ecosystems need to be in place for a successful research-to-startup pipeline. Innovation Ecosystems works with communities, governments, and universities worldwide to foster #innovation / #entrepreneurship programs and m...odels. Her core message to attendees, who included the Chilean military, private industry, deans, researchers, and students from the country's leading universities: "It doesn’t matter who’s doing the research, national labs, universities, or for-profit, private sector companies. What matters most is that this product or service is something customers want to buy and solves a problem." Since 2016, Innovation Ecosystems has worked on an estimated 10 projects in Chile alone, spanning from business incubation assessments, technology extension training modules, innovation immersion weeks, and lean startup bootcamps.

Today we're hosting the inaugural #fintech committee meeting of the Community Bankers Association of Georgia and ATDC. This follows our earlier announcement (bit.ly/30Jh5mc) about both organizations coming together in an initiative to develop and find FinTech solutions to challenges #communitybanks face. For example, the committee heard from Adam Poncz, CTO of SBA Docs, an ATDC portfolio company, who addressed how his company streamlines closing documents for U.S. Small Business Administration loans while keeping to all regulations.

Congrats to TQIntelligence, Inc., an ATDC Accelerate #healthtech company, on getting an National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to further development of its machine learning tech to detect clinically relevant emotional distress in speech samples from at-risk youth:

Today our ATDC incubator, along with the Georgia Centers of Innovation, hosted a delegation from the Georgia Department of Corrections to show how some of our startups Acivilate and FivePoint Payments can help bring innovation into the #corrections and #criminaljustice fields.
