We in the Emory Writing Center are all deeply saddened and angered by the horrific murders in Atlanta this week. Most of the victims of Tuesday’s hate crimes were of Asian descent, and they are among a large number of Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders who have experienced racial hatred and violence in recent months. Many of the tutors and fellows in our Writing Center belong to Asian and AAPI communities, as do a majority of the students we see each day. We under...stand if any students need to cancel or reschedule appointments as you process the events of this week. We also encourage students to take advantage of support resources, such as those listed below. As a Writing Center, we continue to be committed to our mission of fostering an atmosphere that promotes anti-racism, inclusion, social justice, and equality. We want to continue to combat hatred and prejudice in all its forms, including misogyny, which was very clearly a factor in Tuesday’s murders. And we always welcome input and suggestions from the broader community as we continue this important work. Our tutor in the spotlight, Shawna Dempsey, writes: My name is Shawna, and I am a senior in the College majoring in psychology and linguistics. My favorite part about tutoring is getting to meet so many of my fellow students that I may not have been fortunate enough to meet otherwise. Plus, I love reading all the interesting papers and ideas that my peers have! One word to describe me as a tutor would be "writer-focused." I really want to tap into the concerns and questions that writers bring to the session and design our time together based on those inquiries. Writing Center work is definitely teamwork, and I am on your team! When I am not tutoring, I am researching and writing for my honors thesis. Happy Writing!
Our tutor in the spotlight, Jack Wolfram, writes: As a tutor, I'd describe myself as invested. Right now, I'm writing a short play, putting together a research presentation, and just finished revising an interdisciplinary research article as well!
