Lately I have ventured into shooting commercial headshots and lifestyle images. Atlanta has a large industry dedicated to television and print advertising which means plenty of opportunity for aspiring actors looking to be the next face of something big. For me it means an opportunity to regularly work with people who bring an enthusiasm to the camera, a willingness to be their best selves. That allows me to focus more on the other creative elements of photography such as environment, lighting, and tone.

It was April 2009, when I approached Stephen Upchurch about photographing his upcoming fight. Not only was he my favorite kick-boxing instructor at my local gym, but he was also an aspiring Mixed Martial Artist, who was going to be fighting in his second amateur Muay Thai fight later in the month. I had never been in that world, and was interested in documenting his night, before, during, and after the fight. Regardless of the outcome. He was into the idea and arranged to get... me full access to the event. Once Fight Night arrived, I was fully engaged in the opportunity, excited to tell Stephen's story. But before I could get the chance to photograph his fight (his was the eighth of the night), I was approached by the promoter. He needed me to stick around after Stephen's fight, and shoot the remaining professional bouts. His photographer did not show, so he offered me the job. I accepted on the spot. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of an almost 5 year period of working in and documenting the Mixed Martial Arts community in Georgia. The images here are a collection of my personal favorites, from the many I captured during that time.

Occasionally I get to photograph industrial environments, which while not typically thought of for photojournalism, are nonetheless rich in story telling opportunity. The people in this world do not have the luxury of "putting things off until tomorrow". Tight deadlines and production quotas are ever present, and that results in an intensity that brings out the best in human beings.

Over the years, I have had plenty of opportunity working in the corporate event space. Primarily I have specialized in multi-day, offsite meetings and team building events, focused on growth and transformation. These events are usually filled with interesting subject matter, as they are designed to engage people at their emotional core. As a result there is often much to discover, and the human element reveals itself in spontaneous ways. I like to focus on these moments, and I try to spotlight the many characters that inevitably appear, as the events reliably unfold.
