#FunFactFriday A sparrow dipped in raspberry juice is how Roger Torey Peterson described the Purple Finch. An infrequent winter visitor in Georgia, this is... an irruption year so we are seeing many reports of Purple Finches at feeders across Georgia. They are particularly fond of black oil sunflower seed, they use their large, seed-cracking beaks and tongue to crack the seed and extract the tasty meat inside. While they closely resemble the House Finch, there are differences if you look closely. Male Purple Finches have a delicate pink-red on the head and breast, with a brown back and cloudy belly. Females have no red, but are streaked below with a whitish eyestripe and a dark line down the side of the throat. A great article on how to tell the two species apart may be found at https://www.audubon.org//house-finch-or-purple-finch-heres Photo by Nelda Faulkner, Great Backyard Bird Count
