Fifty years ago today, the world's first automated cash dispenser -- later known as an Automated Teller Machine opened at the Barclays Bank in London on 27th June, 1967. Instead of a debit card, the machine used a paper check impregnated with carbon-14, a mildly radioactive substance. The ATM detected the carbon-14, matched the check against a PIN, and paid out the cash.
