I am one of the 2%. That is the percentage of black women physicians in America. . On February 3rd, 2021, three #blackwomen physicians - @drkanisha @ciripmd and @sonyasloanmd started a petition to make National Black Women Physicians Day an official holiday . On February 5th, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (@repjacksonlee) recognized February 8th as National Black Women Physicians Day by formal Congressional Proclamation. This day was chosen in honor of Rebecca Lee Crump...ler, MD who was the first black female physician in the U.S. . Dr. Crumpler was born Rebecca Davis, on February 8, 1831. She was an American physician, nurse and author. After studying at the New England Female Medical College, in 1864 she became the first Black woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States. . Dr. Crumpler was also one of the first female physician authors in the nineteenth century. In 1883, she published A Book of Medical Discourses. The book has two parts that cover the prevention and cure of infertile bowel complaints, and the life and growth of human beings. Dedicated to nurses and mothers, it focuses on maternal and pediatric medical care and was among the first publications written by an African American about medicine. . Dr. Crumpler graduated from medical college at a time when very few Blacks were allowed to attend medical college or publish books. Dr. Crumpler first practiced medicine in Boston, primarily serving poor women and children. . After the American Civil War ended in 1865, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, believing treating women and children was an ideal way to perform missionary work. Dr. Crumpler worked for the Freedmen's Bureau to provide medical care for freed slaves. She was subject to intense racism and sexism while practicing medicine. Still, Dr. Crumpler persevered and worked passionately. . #NBWPD #wearecrumpler #blackwomenphysicians . Source: Wikipedia See more
