As the month of March comes to an end, so does National Women's History Month, but that doesn't mean we will stop celebrating! We are proud to have Alfreda Sheppard serve as a member of our board. Alfreda Sheppard is a partner with Watson Spence, LLP. She joined the practice in September 2009, and has contributed many hours to her practice specialties, civil litigation and criminal defense. Alfreda primarily practices labor and employment litigation, defen...ding employers and representing employees in cases involving allegations of violations of civil rights. In addition, she also represents insurance carriers and their clients, counties and municipalities and their employees in federal court courts and state courts throughout Southwest Georgia. She is also an experienced criminal defense attorney, in all aspects of criminal law at both the state and federal levels. Alfreda has been admitted to the Georgia and Tennessee State Bar Associations and is licensed to practice in both states. An active participant in the legal community, Alfreda serves on the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) Committee for the State Bar of Georgia. Alfreda was also recently appointed to serve on the State Disciplinary Review Board. Alfreda previously served as a past Regional Vice-President for the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, the board President for the Flint River Area Habitat for Humanity as well as a board member of Easter Seals Southern Georgia. Currently, Alfreda is a Trustee for the Albany Museum of Art, where she serves as an officer of the Executive Board. Alfreda is also a Phoebe Foundation board member. We are so proud that Will Tomlinson has been selected as the 2021 STAR Student for Lee County High School. What an accomplishment! To obtain the STAR nomination, high school students must have the highest score on any single test date of the SAT taken through the March test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. Nominee’s SAT scores must be equal to or higher than the 2020 nat...ional average scores on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections of the SAT. Will is the son of our CEO Scott Tomlinson and his wife, Patti. #flintfamily #communitybanking #albanyga #leesburgga #celebratinglife #exceedingexpectations #community See more

Investing in the Future is one of our 7 core standards and mentoring is a great way to do that! Kim Colby, our Senior Vice President/Professional & Retail Banking Manager has developed a mentorship program at Flint Community Bank where she helps rising banking professionals work to meeting their goals. Mary Katherine Iler, Taylor Jenkins, and Shanna Skipper are a few of the individuals she has worked with. Kim was featured in this month's issue of Georgia Communities First, a... publication of the Community Banking Association of Georgia as a part of their celebration of Women's History Month (March) and Community Banking Month (April). Here are a few tidbits from her interview, specifically on the importance of mentorship: GCF: How important is it to have a mentor to grow as a leader? KC: The importance of a mentor to a person beginning their career is immeasurable. A mentor will guide you not only in ways that will help you be successful but will also help you avoid pitfalls that may stall your career. A mentor will be open and honest with you by giving you praise, but also giving you constructive criticism when needed. You will need to be open and honest with them as well because they know what you do not yet know. They have walked a path that you are just beginning. An important step to build a mentor/mentee relationship is to first have a meeting. Come to the meeting prepared with a plan of where you see yourself in the future. What are your goals for your career? After that meeting, a development plan should be put into place with milestones to accomplish. Getting together on a regular basis is also important. It adds a level of accountability that is so important for growth. #womeninbanking #womenshistorymonth #communitybankingmonth #flintfamily #communitybanking #albanyga #celebratinglife #exceedingexpectations #community
