James was born in Emanuel County on November 11, 1928, to Pearl Gay and James Frank Ellington. He grew up in the Bulloch and Effingham County areas and graduated from Georgia Teachers College High School in 1945. James also served as a Sergeant in the United States Army in the early 1950’s. However, he was... a long-time resident of Savannah. James was a very special and remarkable individual. He was a loving, kind, devoted husband, father, and grandfather. James was very generous and giving who took joy in helping others. He loved having family gatherings, celebrations, and entertaining. James played inspirational roles and made differences in the lives of everyone who knew him. He will be truly be missed, but our love for Papa will live in our hearts always. During his working years, James experienced many different employment opportunities, such as owning a used car lot and being an insurance salesman before moving into the finance business. His greatest achievement was buying and serving as the director of Dutchtown Children’s Center for 47 years. Many generations of children have passed through those doors. James was so well loved by the children, the parents, and the staff, that everyone called him Papa, even today. He was preceded in death by Levita B. Ellington in 1961 and by Margian Dixon Ellington in 2018. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Dan Ellington, Gene Ellington, and Harry Ellington, as well as one sister, Shirley Arsenault. James is survived by one sister, Jewel Ray of Claxton. He is survived by his five daughters, Claudia Young, Gilda Bass (Bobby), Gail Lachapelle (Bubba), Susan Darieng, and Lawanna Lewis (Danny). He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel. She was born in Newark, NY, August 30th, 1941 to Wilbur and Gladys (Westcott) Havens. She was married in 1962 to Andreas Rittmeyer. She graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) BFA and MST. Julie was an artist, teacher, mother, and grandmother. Passionate about art, travel, history and politics,... she expressed her love through her creativity, whether it was quilting, gardening, painting, cooking or teaching, and through her extensive charitable work including voter registration, literacy, battered-women support, and hospital support. She lived in Newark, Buffalo, Rochester, Zurich, Paris, London and finally Savannah. She taught at Avon High School, the International School of London, Nazareth College, Savannah Arts Academy and Bartlett Middle School. Julie travelled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. She is survived by her children, Chris, Rob and Katie (Brown), their spouses Miriam, Pam and Earl; grandchildren Nico, Will, Jack, Maggie, Lily, Danny and Kristen, and great grandson Connor, her cousin Jeanne Dugan, Jeanne’s husband Tom Dugan and their boys Jeff and Brian. Today the ashes of Ellen Cavanaugh were laid to rest in Savannah's Catholic Cemetery in a private ceremony officiated by St. Joseph's chaplain Father Joe Smith and attended by the nurses from St. Joseph's/Candler hospital and representatives of Fox & Weeks. We are all grateful to have been a part of this experience that has touched the hearts of many in our community. In the end, Ellen was laid to rest by the people who cared for her during her time of need. Rest in peace, Ellen. You were loved.

She was born in Bulloch County to Bertha and Frank Kerby. Raised in Claxton, she moved to Savannah to work with Southern Bell (later BellSouth and AT&T), where she spent 42 years as an exemplary and dedicated employee. She was married to Clarence Griffin (widowed in 1949) and to Richard Doak from 1953 to 1963. She was a longtime activ...e member of Crossroads Baptist Church. Elaine was a gentle, kind, and smart member of the Greatest Generation, she loved sharing stories of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Raymond Kerby, Hazel Kerby, Bessie Kerby Yentzer, and Gladys Kerby McDonald. She is survived by her son, Gary Griffin, daughter, Diana Morrison (Michael) of Savannah, and George Franklin Kerby (Betty) of Effingham County. Also survived by grandchildren, Cori Sessions, Kyle Griffin (Ruby), and Eric Griffin (Heather), five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Fox & Weeks is privileged to serve the family and loved ones of Curtis A. Carver, Sr., who passed away October 21, 2020 in his sleep after a brief illness. Curtis was born on November 6, 1930 in Etowah, TN. He is survived by his wife, Diane; their six children, Curtis Arthur Carver, Jr. (Eileen), Michael Corey Carver (Cheryl), Louis Damian Carver, Andrea Diane Carver, Mark Derick Carver, and Kimberly Renee Carver; grandchildren, Curtis Arthur Carver, III, Gregory Andrew Carve...r, Michelle Lynn Carver, Bradley Phillip Carver, Brenna Marie Carver, Brett Michael Carver, Candace Donica Carver, Louis Damian Carver, Jr., Glenn Arthur Carver, Hannah Louise Carver, Mary Elizabeth Carver, William Harrison Carver, and Steven James Carver. Curtis graduated from Savannah High School and attended Armstrong State College. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a petty officer and was honorably discharged. Curtis opened Carver Drug Store in 1952 and it was a popular stop on the way to and from the beach and a xture in the Savannah community. After the drug store was destroyed by re in 1968, Curtis transitioned to Culver Rug Company of Savannah and Hilton Head where later he became the Vice President and part owner. He was active in the Wilmington Island community and was heavily involved in the community and civic matters for decades. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, and a former President and twice received the Man of the Year award from the Sertoma Club. Curtis was a longtime member of Nativity of our Lord and St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Churches. He was very active in the building of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, serving as the Parish Council President for many years. He was Chairman of the Building Committee. In these roles, Curtis led initiatives to build the school, church, oce building, and parish center with his best friend and adopted brother, Father Patrick O’Brien. Curtis was the recipient of the Bishop Francis X. Gartland Service Award for his signicant and many contributions to the life and work of the church in the Diocese of Savannah. Curtis was an avid golfer and member of Wilmington Island Club, where he served as Chairman of the Board. He also hosted the Gin on the River Club every Wednesday night for many years. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Fox & Weeks Islands Chapel. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. Chris was born in Savannah on November 18, 1970, the second of four children, to Danny and Janet Edwards. He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Day School and Calvary Day School. He worked in construction sales and built many lasting relationships with local builders and contractors. Chris had a huge heart and was loved by ...everyone he met. Fifteen years ago, the greatest joy came into his life with the birth of his much loved son, Pierce. There was nothing in life Chris loved more than spending time with his son. After being a dad, his next favorite role was Uncle Chris to his seven nieces and nephews. Family meant more to Chris than anything, and he brought his contagious laughter and bright smile with him everywhere he went. He was born in Savannah and after the loss of his mother at a young age, lived in Savannah and Lyons with family. During that time, his uncles taught him the construction trade which ultimately led to him owning and operating the Keith Ray Construction Company. Mr. Ray was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church and enjoyed hunting, fis...hing, golf and especially his grandson, Alex. He was preceded in death by his mother, Emma Grace Ray; daughter, Tanya Marie Ray; and sisters, Linda Felkel, Barbara Grace Ray and mother-in-law, Alma VanGennip. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Marilyn Ray; son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Kirsten Ray; grandson, Alex Ray all of Savannah; sister, Jean Litsey of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews and very close cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at St. James Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the mass. Fox & Weeks is privileged to serve the family and loved ones of Joseph Edward Anckner (Joe), who passed away on October 18th. He lived the past 36 years at The Landings on Skidaway Island, in Savannah, GA. Born January 30, 1932, Joe grew up in West Hempstead, Long Island, NY. He began his long career in aviation with Grumman American at 17, left to serve in the Navy as a navigator on AF-2S Guardians flying off aircraft carriers, and then returned to Grumman after his service.... While there he earned an engineering degree from Hofstra University, worked on the Apollo Lunar Lander, and helped design the early Gulfstreams. In 1973, Joe moved to Savannah with Gulfstream and was the only international salesman at the time. He was personally responsible for over 200 G-II, III, IV & V sales, selling to heads of state, kings, and corporate business leaders in over 50 countries. Joe retired in 1994 as Senior Vice President of International Sales & Marketing. During his career, he also ran the annual NBAA Gulfstream Golf Classics around the country. In 1990 during the Gulf War, Joe was instrumental in arranging transportation to Saudi Arabia for the volunteers from United Way of The Coastal Empire in the Great Savannah Squares Bake Lift. The effort distributed 5 tons of home-baked cookie bars to our 20,000 soldiers from Fort Stewart's 24th Infantry Division deployed there. In 1995, he was asked to take over Harrod’s Aviation in London, growing the FBO at Heathrow and opening new locations at Luton and Stansted. Upon his second retirement, he specialized in buying and selling airplanes and helicopters for private customers. Joe loved his work, enjoyed his many golf groups, his Tuesday night poker games, and especially his family and friends. He really loved the North Carolina mountains, where he & Vicki spent the last 17 summers and made many great friends. Joe is survived by his wife of 43 years, Vicki Ceryanec Anckner; his sisters, Gladys Lyons and Francis Acer; his brother, Bill Anckner; his children, Joseph Anckner III (Joy), Debra Anckner McCauley, Donna Feild (John), Thomas Anckner, and Michael Anckner (Caitlin); also 6 grandchildren, 3 great grands, and his sweet dog, Daisy. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph & Mary Anckner, and his beloved granddaughter, Brittany McAuley. Funeral at Bonaventure Cemetery will be private. He was born in Greenville, South Carolina May 22, 1934 to Hoke and Agnes Grant and was a graduate of Paris High School. He loved to travel, spend time on the water and time with his family. Surviving is his wife of sixty years, Ann Jackson Grant; son, Barry Grant (Riley); daughter, Christy Dawson (David); son, Bradford Grant (Mary), and grandchildren, Blake Dawson (Gabby), Tyler Dawson, Mary Everett Grant and Brady Grant. Fox & Weeks is privileged to serve the family and loved ones of Philip Michael Campbell, 72, who died October 14, 2020 at home. Phil was born in Des Moines, IA, then grew up in LaMirada, California. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He served two tours in Vietnam, was a member of the honor guard, then flew as a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol. Phil was a man of faith and attended Anthem Church in Angier. He had a love of many hobbies, including airplanes, moto...rcycles, camping, and fast cars. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a doting grandfather, and a loyal friend. He led his life with honor, firm in his convictions, but always with love and grace. Phil is survived by his wife, partner, confidant, and love of his life, Dianne. He leaves two children - Richard Campbell (Theresa) of Savannah, GA and Shannon House (William) of Willow Spring, NC. Seven grandchildren had the great good fortune to call him theirs- John Edwards, Michael Edwards, Everett House, Emily House, Matthew House, Ian House, and Nicky House (Papa’s constant sidekick). He also leaves two sisters, Karen Kampen (Steve) of Lake Havasu City, Arizona and Sandra Campbell of California. He will be sorely missed by his ever-present companion, Luna. A memorial service and celebration of Phil’s life will be graveside at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Savannah on October 31 at 11:00 am. Masks will be provided for those who may need one. Fox & Weeks is privileged to serve the family and loved ones of Wilma Ruth Wheat Thacker, who entered the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ in the early morning hours of October 13, 2020. Born in Peters Landing, Tennessee on November 11,1925 to Grady and Winnie Wheat. She was the oldest of six children. Wilma came to Savannah at the age of 16 to work as a Rosie the Riveter in support of the World War II effort. The following year she met the love of her life Elton Johnny Th...acker while working in a restaurant downtown. The two were married and started a family while Elton’s naval career moved them around the east coast. They soon settled back in Savannah to raise their daughters Sandy and Debbie. Mrs. Thacker was a proud member of Calvary Baptist Temple. In 1970, Reverend John Tippett approached her with a dream of founding a day care and preschool as part of the new Calvary Day School. She joined the church staff as the director of Calvary Day Care where she would serve tirelessly for the next 43 years. For over four decades she oversaw the care of countless infants, toddlers, and children, and she knew the names of each and every one. Her work ethic was unmatched and she surrounded herself with the finest employees who she loved as family. She was Savannah’s surrogate mom and grandmother always available to offer a word of advice and encouragement to young parents, and was equipped with her file cabinet first aid kit of witch hazel and bandaids to fix all the scraped knees and elbows. The daycare building on the Calvary campus was dedicated in her honor in 2002. Mrs. Thacker was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 65 years, Elton S. Thacker, her parents Winnie and Grady Wheat, and sister Vera Wheat Piland. She is survived by her children Sandra Reed (Jimmy), Debbie Laing (Jody); four grandchildren, Kevin Reed (Amanda), Jason Reed (Carla), Jennifer Laing Copeland, Julie Laing Giardina(Jeremy); nine great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Mary Hanon, Ashlee, Lee, Luke, Georgia, John, Sarah-Virginia, and Jackson; siblings Reva Wheat Hickerson, Roberta Wheat Evans, Douglas Wheat(Helen), and Johnny Wayne Wheat(Linda); and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at Calvary Baptist Temple today at 1 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Kenny Grant. Family will receive friends at noon in the sanctuary.
