The Oxford Organic Farm is a living laboratory for Emory University students who want to learn about food systems, farming, and environmental stewardship. This exciting new program will have three parts, first learning about honey bees and 'virtually' opening the hives and seeing the colonies. Next, exploring the biodiversity in the insect world, and how beneficial insects are attracted to the farm for pest control. The same techniques relate to pollinator conservation and things people can do at home. The program will conclude with interactive time for questions from the audience.
Georgia Bird Fest 2021 kicks off this weekend, with a full month of activities, including guided field trips to Georgia's best birding hotspots, nature-based workshops, and guest speakers. We still have two spots open in this Saturday's guided birding trip to Eufaula NWR-Bradley Unit, where we'll hope to find amazing bird diversity including King Rail, Purple Gallinule, Little Blue Heron, Prothonotary Warbler, and LOTS more. Check out the full schedule of events and grab your spot before they're all gone! #GABirdFest https://tinyurl.com/3ztxh567 Photo: Purple Gallinule by Margaret Borge/Audubon Photography Awards
Georgia Audubon is super excited to be the recipient of a 2021 KEEN Effect Kids Grants for our Atlanta Urban Ecologists Program! VOLUME UP!!!! Have you ever heard this sound coming from high in the sky? These are Sandhill Cranes. It’s the time of year when these birds are coming to winter in the southern United States, often traveling in large groups.... This incredible footage was captured by Emily Keener near Red Top Mountain State Park in Bartow County, Georgia!
Action Alert: Ask Governor Kemp to Protect Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp There's some really bad news for the Okefenokee Swamp and the more than 200 bird species that winter, breed, migrate through, or live year-round in this amazing natural area in south Georgia. Following the White House's rollbacks of protections under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) earlier this year, the wetlands on the proposed Twin Pines mining site are no longer protected under the Clean Wat...er Act. Twin Pines Mines recently announced that it plans to dig for minerals without a federal permit at the edge of the vast wildlife refuge in the Okefenokee Swamp. The only way to stop this potentially disastrous mine is to ask the State of Georgia NOT to issue the required permits. As a member of the 43-member Okefenokee Protection Alliance, Georgia Audubon has gone on record as opposing mining near the Okefenokee Swamp which could jeopardize both the integrity of the Okefenokee Swamp and the health of the many birds and other wildlife that live there. To learn more about this proposal or to send a letter to Governor Kemp, please visit https://www.georgiaaudubon.org/okefenokee-swamp.html
