VACCINE UPDATE! In our weekly LLUSPH Faculty/Staff zoom meeting, we were fortunate to have Dr. Michael Hogue, Dean of the LLU School of Pharmacy, and a committe...e member on the CDC's Vaccine taskforce and the SB County Vaccine taskforce, so he's in the know of the vaccine facts. He gave us an excellent update on the vaccine. The Pfizer one just got reviewed by the FDA yesterday, and Marderna is next week. Here are the bullet points from his short presentation this AM: *Myth: It changes your DNA. FACT: Both V's are based on mRNA, which is a first for vaccines, but the tech has been used in medical treatments for 15 years. Vaccine goes into a cell's CYTOPLASM, where it creates the antibodies to fight the virus's spike protein. Since it does NOT go into the nucleus, it does NOT change anyone's DNA or genetics. *Myth: Developed too fast, thus not safe or effective. FACT: Due to current tech, the C19 virus was sequenced within days and work was started right away. Sample size for the big study is 40,000 people (average FDA vaccine study sample size only 27,000). We are 2 months into a 2-year study. 1st dose = 50% immune response protection. 2nd dose = 95% protection! (Only HepA is higher, at just about 100% protection). Study was well-designed, and represented US demographics very closely, with the exception of Native Americans (and the ongoing study is working to rectify that). Efficacy and side effects were similar in all ethnic groups. *Myth: Ingredients dangerous. FACT: There are NO PRESERVATIVES in these 2 C19 vaccines, which is why they require deep freeze for storage. One of the "purest and cleanest substances" to enter your body. *CA has Pfizer vaccine, SB County will get Mon, Loma Linda will get Tues. Within 6 wks, all healthcare and long-term care residents can get. *It is VOLUNTARY, not mandatory. *Moderna, the other vaccine, will be reviewed by FDA next week. *Side effects: 10% get fever by day 2 and gone in 24 hrs. 50-60% will feel "achy". Zero serious side effects. In UK, 2 cases of allergy reactions (so low probably due to no preservatives). *If you have already tested positive in the past, you can still get vaccine. Will just increase your antibody levels. *Efficacy of both vaccines similar; NOT interchangeable (you start with one, 2nd dose has to be from same brand). Pfizer's 21 days between doses; Moderna’s 28 days between doses. Bottom line: after hearing this report, I'm more reassured about taking the vaccine, when I become eligible for it. From Shawn Back in 2017 I played in a pickleball tournament in Rockford Illinois. I met Julie Fiebig from Prolite sports at that tournament. I told her that I wasn’t really interested in buying a paddle but I guess she noticed that I had my design on everything I was wearing except my paddle she told me that Prolite could put my design on paddles. I was now interested. Lol!!! Julie and the Prolte team have been making my paddles ever since. Right now I’m in Rhode. My wife sent me a text saying I had a package from Julie. I told her to open it and she sent me this picture I love my Christmas gift from Julie and Prolite Sports. I can’t wait to play with this. Last week a company reached out to me on Instagram. Point is that this conversation took place and I didn’t know prolite was sending me anything for Christmas. I hear great things about other pickleball companies out there.
