Looking for those last minute gifts? Consider these holiday gift ideas for $30 or less to help keep your family safe and prepared in the event of a fire or other emergency: #1 Smoke alarms. These should be installed on each level of your home and in or near each sleeping area. Consider purchasing alarms for those individuals with special needs, such as those that may have hearing impairments or need special assistance. #2 Carbon Monoxide Alarms. When using fuels such as ...propane or natural gas, carbon monoxide alarms will warn family members of the buildup of this colorless, odorless gas which can be deadly. #3 Fire Extinguisher. Fire extinguishers are effective when extinguishing a small fire. They should be easily accessible, and appropriate for home use #4 First Aid Kit. First aid kits come in different sizes. Choose one that fits the needs of your family, or simply design your own. Store it in your home disaster kit. #5 Flash Lights. Have a flashlight for each family member and place them in strategic locations throughout the home for easy access. Keep extra batteries on hand for use with these. #6 Home Escape Ladder. If you or your loved ones sleep in an upstairs bedroom, this safety device will allow you to escape should fire block your main exit.

Many holiday celebrations and observances require the use of candles. The number of candle related fires increases significantly during this holiday season. In order to ensure a fire safe holiday when using candles, follow these precautions: If possible, avoid using lit candles. Always keep candle tools, such as matches and lighters, out of the reach of children.... Make sure candles are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked over. Never leave the room where candles are burning, particularly if there are young children or pets present. The family dog can easily be the cause of a tipped over candle. Never put lit candles on a tree. In fact, never go near the Christmas tree with an open flame candles, lighters or matches . When using candles, make sure there is a one-foot clearance around the candle. This includes curtains, decorations, or anything combustible. Consider using flameless candles, such as battery operated candles. Many of these candles are scented, and work well in windows or other areas where combustibles may be nearby.
