It’s been a busy week, so I’m totally running late on this, but we just wanted to say Thanks, Athens! for voting us your favorite place to take an adult creative class. This year we’re doing something totally different for our annual Love Show. Announcing LOVE SHARE 2021! Instead of a gallery show with works for sale, all work will be swapped among participating artists. Each artist will be asked to make three pieces of art. They’ve gotta be 2D and measure 5x7 inches. ... You’ll have until May 1st to submit your work. We’ll display the pieces for a couple months, and then we’ll send them in the mail so that each artist receives three pieces from three different artists. I don’t have all the pieces in order to open up the submission window yet, but I will soon. More details coming this week!

I spent an afternoon last week playing around with the Holbein Duo water-soluble oil colors, and, well, I’m in love. They paint like oil colors. They *are* oil colors. There are hues that are more opaque, hues that are more transparent, and they have a slow dry time. The only difference is that they have an additive that allows you to use water instead of mineral spirits. I did a couple quick washes / under-paintings with watered-down paint, and I’m still not over the shock o...f being able to watercolor with oils. I think the dry time for your under-paintings might be a little slower when using water; I’m not sure. I’ll have to run some tests. But these paints also work with traditional mineral spirits and other mediums, so you’ve got flexibility. The ability to clean your brushes with water is . Finally, I have to tell you about their Luminous colors. Holy moly they are fluorescent. Luminous Yellow looks like someone cracked open a highlighter and dumped out the juice. It’s crazy bright. My personal preference was to mix a luminous color in with an opaque hue because the luminous colors are more transparent than I prefer. Well, we finally did it. We stocked up on water-soluble oil paints I’ll share some of my personal experiences with these paints tomorrow, but for tonight, here’s what Holbein has to say about their Duo Aqua Oil Colors: There has always existed the need for an oil color for the professional and for the student with all the handling qualities and characteristics of a true oil color, but without the negatives of the traditional medium.... The production of a water soluble oil color has been solved by different manufacturers in different ways, though not all seem to have the qualities of true oil color. Holbein’s objective in formulating DUO Aqua Oil Color was production of a genuine oil color for the professional, with the same qualities and characteristics of the traditional Holbein Artist Oil Color, certainly one of the world’s finest. To make DUO identical in every respect to its traditional professional grade cousin, Holbein developed a unique additive which works as a surfactant, any residue of which loses its effectiveness once the oil color is dry. DUO Aqua Oil Color is water soluble, but the oil is identical to that used in Holbein Artist Oil Color. There is no special treatment. There is no modification or breaking down (cracking) of the oil. There is no water in the product, only the additive that is rendered redundant and of no effect in the drying process. The surface agent covers the pigments and oil, this making both water sensitive or soluble. That is all. Hi everyone! Kristen here. I wanted to let you know what I’ve been working on these past few weeks (uh, years). A new website! It’s gonna be cleaner, fresher, and packed with so much more organization. Hopefully this will make shopping easy and dare I say fun for you. It’ll roll out Nov. 1st no matter what state it’s in, and you can enjoy watching it evolve as I make even more updates. ... Expect some sneak peaks over the next two weeks (and hold onto you hats when you see the new, super-sexy sidebar). But I wanted to go ahead and let you know that one change has already gone into effect, and it pertains to LOCAL DELIVERY. Henceforth: There is no minimum order amount for local deliveries! Need one pencil ASAP? We got you. Orders under $50 will incur a $5 delivery fee, while order $50+ will be delivered for free! Here’s what is staying the same: We go out on deliveries each day between 2-4pm, so orders placed before 2pm will be delivered that same day, whereas orders placed after 2pm get delivered the following day. Same 5-mile radius of the shop applies. Reach out to us if you live farther out.

The VP debate last night got us thinking about number twos... you know, pencils! These days pencils are usually graded on the HB scale where H traditionally referred to the graphite’s hardness and B referred to its darkness or blackness. Because hard pencils are pretty much always lighter and soft pencils are pretty much always blacker, these two factors got combined into one single grading scale.... The lightest / hardest pencil that Staedtler makes for its Lumograph line, for example, is 10H, and its softest / darkest is 12B. What are US #2 pencils, you ask? They are typically HBs, around the middle of the scale. But there’s no universal standard, so an HB pencil by one brand may be darker and softer than another brand’s HB offering. We’ve got news! Taking a plunge during a pandemic wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t too hard either, thanks to a sweet #coviddeal and these magical rooms. Slowly but surely, we are branching out into the space next door formerly occupied by Community, Pope on Prince, and later the galleries of Tif Sigfrids and Ridley Howard. To say we feel blessed is an understatement.... It’s so nice to create a dedicated space for all of our behind-the-scenes services like photography and printing. When we open for in-store shopping again, you’ll be able to wander the sales floor (in the OG space) without having to navigate around printers and photo equipment! And we’ll have a much bigger space for your DIY photo room rentals. We can’t wait for you to come visit one day.
