Premiere happening today! Thank you Neeta Helms for this beautiful write up - see below. In 2020 we commissioned numerous works and 12 of them did not even get performed due to COVID cancellations. This week we gave The Choral Arts Society of Washington Chamber Singers the world premiere of Brittney E. Boykin's Stand Up, commissioned by Classical Movements’ Eric Daniel Helms New Music Program in honor of the activist and educator Mary Church Terrell . It will be perform...ed as part of our Sounds of Hope and Harmony Concert Series, conducted by Scott Tucker this Friday. I am so proud that this piece will finally be heard. She is a rising composer, and the work honors an overlooked and extraordinary Suffragist. Composer, conductor and pianist Brittney Boykin (B.E. Boykin) is a native of Alexandria, Virginia and comes from a musical family. After graduating Spelman College in 2011 with a B.A. in Music, Ms. Boykin continued her studies at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. As a pianist, Boykin earned many prizes and most recently, in April 2021 the The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts named Boykin as part of The Cartography Project, commissioning composers and librettists to create works for the NSO and WNO that use music as both a source of healing and a way to open dialogue about the future of anti-racism. Boykin is currently the Assistant Director of the Spelman College Glee Club in Atlanta. In addition to being the director of the Treble Choir at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954) was an educator, advocate for civil rights and the founding president of the National Association of Colored Women. Terrell began campaigning for suffrage during her undergraduate studies at Oberlin and continued to be active in the National Association Woman Suffrage Association, where she befriended Susan B. Anthony. Throughout the years leading up to the ratification of the 19th Amendment, Terrell pushed for the involvement of black women in suffrage advocacy. In the years after, Terrell continued to draw public attention to injustices, particularly those faced by black Americans. What a reproach it is to a government which owes its very existence to the love of freedom in the human heart that it should deprive any of its citizens of their sacred and cherished rights. Major Announcement The Kennedy Center recently announced its 50th anniversary season and I’m extremely humbled to be on the team of commissioned composers and librettists for the Cartography Project. As a daughter of the DMV, I can’t even fully express what this means. This project/collaboration is one that is very dear to my heart and I’m extremely excited to be partnered with my Spelman sister and namesake, Britney RayCrowell, who is a PHENOMENAL artist and poet. More details about the project are coming. Please visit tkc.co/Cartography for the official press release
Honored to be featured - Thank you Jasmine and The Atlanta Opera!
