Why should you vote for Brutz English for Lamar County Chief Magistrate? In a word, Experience. I practiced law for nearly eight years. Through much of that time, I was a public defender. Do you know what public defenders do? They defend the Constitution. They take on the worst cases and the worst clients who have zero resources, and they do this because they believe the only way the Constitution can protect any of us is if it protects the very least and the worst of us. ... I’m still a believer on our Constitution, though my public defender days are long behind me. I also have worked as a prosecutor. I’ve worked as a Code Enforcement Officer. I understand the need for law and order, and the importance rules and justice. I have been both a civil plaintiff’s attorney, and a defense attorney. I have personally participated in thousands of hours of courtroom proceedings, and I’ve observed many thousands of hours more. Outside of my professional law practice, I have been a landlord, and I have been a tenant. I have sued people, and I have been sued. I have sworn out warrants for people, and I have been led off in handcuffs myself. I’ve dealt with all manner of real estate matters. I’ve written more contracts than I can remember. I’ve written, reviewed, and dissected more statutes, codes, and ordinances than I can count. Through all of this, I have not only seen, but personally experienced, the very best and worst of our legal and judicial system. I understand how it is supposed to work, how it typically does work, and what happens when it goes completely off the rails. I know these things because I have lived them first-hand through many different positions over the past 20 years. That diversity and depth of practical, relevant, hands-on experience can only come from years of practice and participation in many, many courtrooms. Those years of experience have given me the relevant knowledge, skill, and perspective necessary to effectively, efficiently, and ethically perform all of the duties of the Chief Magistrate Judge from the very first day on the bench. There are some good men running against me, but it takes more than just character to be a good Chief Magistrate Judge. It also takes the right training, years of experience, and broad perspective.
