Little Quilts 11.01.2022

Today we remember where we all were on Sept. 11, nineteen year ago this morning. Thanks to more than 2000 of you, we were able to send 2200 little quilts to the families of the police and firemen who gave their lives that day. This wonderful tribute is one of the things we are most proud of during our 20 years, at Little Quilts. May God Bless all of you and God Bless America. The article below was published in American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine in Feb 2002.

On this day we remember, and all recall where we were, 17 years ago; when our country and freedom was attacked. Our strength and resilience as a country is shown everyday! Quilters display their patriotism, and love of the USA in their homes with patriotic quilts, table mats, and more. The eagle is a symbol of strength for the United States. Celebration, was made by Alice Berg, in 1996, inspired by an antique quilt. In a previous post you can see the response from over 2000 quilters around the world..... when they sent us small quilts, that we sent to families of police and firemen who were the first responders on that terrible day. May God continue to bless us all.

At Little Quilts, we have been blessed over the years to make friends with quilters not only in the USA but across the globe. It was most evident sixteen years ago, on Sept. 13, when we sent an email to the then 500 names on our email list. We asked for a small quilt to be sent so we could forward it to the families of the police and firefighters lost in the attacks on 9/11. Amazingly that email was forwarded to other quilters, and within a month we received over 2300 small q...uilts! To share this outpouring.... we laid them out on plastic dropcloths in the parking lot of the shop. The Marietta Fire Department came with the bucket truck with ladders to raise up for a photo!. Shown here, is what the generosity of quilters around the world sent! The picture was even shown on the Today Show! Some quilts came with letters of thanks for giving quilters an opportunity to express their feels of the tragedy and gratefulness of the first responders. With the help of many we distributed the small quilts, and moved on, knowing that we had extended the hand of friendship through these small quilts. The terrorist attacks against the US, had a profound effect on everyone, and the making of a small red, white, and blue quilt, hopefully brought comfort and love to the families of firefighters, police officers, and emergency workers. Today we remember the tragedy, and also share this photo of quilters reaching out to help and comfort. Little Quilts started as a wholesale pattern business in 1986, writing books, and evolved into a retail store from 1998-2015; when I retired, and closed the store. The online business remains today, as a source for Little Quilts books, patterns, and fabric. This quilt project with the 2300 small quilts, is probably our proudest accomplishments, thanks to many generous quilters here and abroad. See more

We're excited that our Rug Braiding teacher Anne Morton Caldwell is a featured artist in a new Textile Exhibit at the Southeastern Quilt and Textile museum. She and another fiber artist Sally Austin will have their work on display till the end of August. The museum is in Carrollton GA and is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The Little Quilts store is closed since Mary Ellen retired in Dec. 2015. Don't miss this chance to see Anne's beautiful braided rugs, purses, and other braided pieces. There's even an 8x10 foot oval rug she made for her den! Sally's quilts and fiber art are fantastic too!

Her store may be closed & my Mom may be retired... But she manages to keep busy designing fabric for her new line.

Little Quilts 11.08.2021

Since retiring I've been busy designing a new line of fabric for Henry Glass Fabrics, along with cleaning the sewing room, plus making a valiant effort to learn social media....facebook, blogging, etc. The newest collection "Savannah Garden", another line in the "Reflection of the South", is shipping now. So be sure to ask for it at your favorite quilt shop. "Savannah Garden" is a tribute to the lavish gardens that once graced the southern landscape. This collection depicts... beautiful floral designs and paisley prints reminiscent of fabrications from an earlier era. It's created in a pallette of vanilla, spa blue, Prussian blue, accents of honey and soft red. There's also a wonderful toile fabric illustrating song birds, camellia flowers, and the Cherokee rose, the state flower of Georgia. We're in the process of getting it up on the website very soon, along with other goodies! You can see them for now at the Henry Glass website at www.henryglassfabrics.com. You can download the free patterns there too for a table runner, bed runner, or quilt. We'll be sure to do a post when it's on the website! Can hardly believe it's been more than six months that the shop is closed. We miss all of our wonderful customers, more than you can know! Sorry it's been so long since we've posted! I'm trying to 'get with it'...please be patient with me! See more

Dear Friends, I hope you are all staying home, staying safe during this trying time. Times like this, as during 9/11; quilters rallied round and started seeing small quilts. Now many are sewing masks to help health care workers to protect their N95 masks for longer use. I know we all have stashes. My daughter in law, and ICU nurse, said they can use scrub hats to cover their hair. I’ve made 20, given them to her. She said her unit loved the little bit of fun or whimsy the... hat added to their uniforms. How about making a mask or some hats, while working on all those UFO’s!! Here’s a pattern and video I found easy to follow! If you’re in the Marietta GA, and would like to make scrub hats for her ICU unit at Kennestone Hospital, you can email me at: [email protected]. We’ll figure out a place to drop them or get them to me. I’d post a picture of some I’ve made.... but you know how lo-tech I am!! I’ll have daughter or granddaughter show me how! Wash your hands, stay home; we’ll get through this together.....God Bless America! Mary Ellen See more
