Brachials (Muscle of the month)

Muscle of the Month Welcome to the first in series of muscle of the month. Did you know there are over 700 muscles in the human body, connected to206 bones? Muscles which bring about movement include voluntary some are tiny muscles which wrinkle the forehead, to much larger muscles of the thigh. We also have involuntary muscles (not under conscious control) muscles like the heart (Cardiac muscle) or the smooth muscles in the walls of the internal organs like the stomach. Most... of the muscles have Latin names which may describe their location eg: Brachials (bray-kee-AH-liss) muscle of the arm or will show beginning and end eg: Brachioradialis (bray-kee-oo-ray-dee-AH-liss) running from the upper arm to the radius, or forearm. We have mentioned two muscles in the arm, let’s start with the Brachials, this muscle originates on distal anterior of the humerus shaft or (outside of the upper arm)an inserts on the ulnar tuberosity(the little round bone above your hand) now that we know what this muscle’s name means, and where it is located lets tell you what action or movement it makes this muscle flexes or bends the elbow, you use this muscle when lifting it is really the workhorse of the elbow it does most of the work credited to the biceps.
