Grandiose - Words, like nature, half reveal and half conceal the soul within. Awoke at 4am this particular morning as I was still used to EST. The winds were blowing some 30 plus miles an hour and the sand was blowing up the valley from Mesquite Sand Dunes. The one good thing about this morning was the cloud cover and beautiful light at sunrise from Zabriskie Point. This is only my second trip the Death Valley and the one complaint I would have from my first trip was a l...ack of clouds on most days. "Fly Fishing Haven" - The Pigeon River, close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, follows HWY 215 down to Lake Logan and has some amazing white water and (mostly) hidden waterfalls. I have read Kevin Adams WaterFall book and he talks about the endless drops and falls along this section of the river, that in most cases are pretty dangerous and extremely difficult to access. I have looked many times to try and find a good access point to explore to no avail. But just before L...ake Logan, there are some nice pools that make this area great for trout fishing. The Gathering - I set my alarm this morning for 1 hour before sunrise in hopes o there being enough cloud cover to allow or a nice sunrise over the ocean. For me, I honestly don't care for shooting the sun rising out of the ocean. It is that pre-sunrise light that I really love to capture. Those are the most intense colors without the overpowering effects of the sun and the yellow cast that it produces. So I walked out near the Pier and began shooting some images from a...bout .8 seconds to about 1.6 seconds. I have found that range to be the most pleasing for me to get those nice patterns of the waves with just enough detail to allow the lines to lead one's eye into the image. We tend to miss the details in life as we journey on. Sometimes, we need to slow down and look at things from a different perspective. These are mud cracks reflecting the light and colors of a sunset sky in Death Valley National Park. "Sublime" - I still remember my first trip to the Grand Canyon some 6 to 8 years ago when my wife and I took the kids on a nearly 3 week road trip out West. As in most cases, the pictures you see just can't hold a candle to actually being there in person. So a couple of weeks ago we headed to the North Rim knowing that all of the facilities would be closed and with that go most of the crowds. And our assumptions were correct as we watched the sunset by ourselves an...d only had a scattering of a few people that had picked their favorite spot to watch the sunset away from where we had chosen to set up. This particular night was also the last night of our trip to SW Utah and Arizona and was a great way to end the trip. As we have now entered into this season of Thanksgiving, I have so much to be thankful for. The Lord has been good to me and my family and I could not ask for a better wife or children. I am not deserving of all the blessings I have, and that is another reason that it keeps me humble and that I always have a heart of Thanksgiving. And today also happens to be my birthday (52 trips around the sun) and I get to spend it with those I love the most. So as this season comes around, stop and count your blessings and be ever mindful of the "Giver of Good Gifts". "Separation" - I have always loved photographing trees. There is just something about them that intrigues me. And it does not matter the season. I found this scene while in SW Utah and I loved the way the morning light was illuminating the tree while keeping the beautiful colors of Paria in shade. I am not sure what makes up the soil here that gives these hills their incredible color, but it is mesmerizing. If not for the intensity of the light later in the morning..., I could spend all day here finding scenes such as this one.
