INSPIRATION I think the first moment that I understood that a choir could do far more than sing Western Classical art music was when I first heard The Morehouse... College Glee Club conducted by @David Morrow in 1992. David and the Morehouse Glee Club have continued to be a constant inspiration for the almost 30 years since. I tried to perform Betelehemu with my high school choir my very first year teaching in 1994 (maybe not the best choice for a first-year teacher...) - David was a very generous clinician and we all learned a LOT:-) This Sunday, David has been generous enough to co-host Sounds Choral with me. Join us at 2pm Eastern/11am Pacific at wwfm.org for an hour of African-American Spirituals starting with historical recordings from the 1940's of greats like Hall Johnson and John W. Work continuing to the greatest living arrangers like Stacey V. Gibbs, Rosephanye Dunn Powell, Marques L. A. Garrett and David's former student Brandon Waddles. We also get to hear from the Morehouse tradition including David's predecessor and teacher Wendell Whalum and his colleague Uzee Brown. The MCGC is doing something! COVID was a stall, not a stop to the Glee Club Reunion! We are having a series of Virtual Mini-Reunions as we count down to February 2022 when we will all plan to meet in person (GOD WILLING) at Morehouse College. The first Virtual Mini Reunion is THIS WEEKEND! The brothers who went on the MCGC's first international 5 country tour of Africa in 1972 will meet and share their stories from nearly 50 years ago with our current singers! On March 26, 1972, they were at the airport on their way to DC for State Department sponsored reception and then on to Senegal! (Thanks Van Johnson) Who's reunion is next? Stay tuned!! Glee Club alumnus writes childrens' books!!

To the seniors of the Morehouse College Glee Club and to the all the graduates of Morehouse College: "The Graduate" by Ernie Barnes is a Commencement address. Etymology of "degree" means to step out. (Thanks Dr. Anne Watts) Commencement means to BEGIN. Don't just celebrate being DONE. Celebrate the new beginning! COVID-19 made us just want to "get done" and "make it through." But look at this brother. First, his cap and gown fit him as though tailored to his every dimension ...and movement--there is no way the cap will fall off! Speaking of movement, look at his gate!! The length of his stride and the flow of his arms show determination and direction. Look at his shoes! They look new and old at the same time. The leather still has some shine of pride on it and they fit as though he has been somewhere in them. They are ready to walk the road ahead! Look at his hands! His right hand to the fore; tightly holding his diploma which he worked for and has celebrated getting; saying "Look what I've got!" Yet, his left hand flows backward--OPEN-- as if to be ready to grab the hand of someone who needs him to pull them along! Lastly, LOOK AT HIS FACE! You can see it because his head is UP! That face shows pride in accomplishment, determination to face what is ahead, and the realization "I believe I can do it"! Notice the world he is in is rustic and less defined, yet he goes to find, no, TAKE his place in it. So in the midst of the chaos in which you find yourselves, don't forget "Corona" means "CROWN!" Wear yours today and keep growing tall enough to wear others! We need you! Congratulations! See more
