FRIDAY FACTS: June is National Aphasia Awareness Month. What is aphasia? Aphasia is a condition that robs you of the ability to communicate. It can affect your ability to speak, write and understand language, both verbal and written. Aphasia typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or a head injury. But it can also come on gradually from a slow-growing brain tumor or a disease that causes progressive, permanent damage. The severity of aphasia depends on a number of condition...s, including the cause and the extent of the brain damage. Once the cause has been addressed, the main treatment for aphasia is speech and language therapy. The person with aphasia relearns and practices language skills and learns to use other ways to communicate. #rehabilitativeservices #mhmcares #communication #ourcommunityourhospital

VACCINE APPOINTMENT UPDATE! 1/29/21 Memorial Hospital and Manor is now suspending making new appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine until we receive our next shipment. Our temporary suspension is due to a lack of vaccine supply. We are monitoring this closely on a daily basis. We have created a list of all persons who have called in seeking an appointment and these calls will be responded to in the order they came in. ... Also be aware, if you have an existing appointment, we are monitoring the need to postpone these as well. If your appointment is affected, you will be contacted by the hospital via telephone call. Please come to your appointment unless otherwise contacted. If your appointment is postponed, it will be reinstated in priority order according to the date and time of your original appointment as soon as we receive the vaccines. We regret any inconvenience this temporary disruption of supply has caused you and would like to assure you that we will update our openings as soon as possible. If you are in Phase 1A+ (health care workers, first responders, persons over 65 and their caregivers) please know you can still call 229-246-3500 ext 565 and be placed on our waiting list. A beautiful tribute to our hard working crew! Thank you Dr. Jon McRae for taking the time to recognize those who cared for you. December 16, 2020 On Saturday, November 28th I tested positive for COVID and by the next day I felt bad enough to go to our Memorial Hospital where they ran several tests and took X-Rays and decided I needed to be admitted. ... I was put in a quarantine room where I stayed eight days, never leaving the room or having any visitors. The only people I saw were members of the staff of the hospital. They would come in and out covered in all that personal protective gear that I know was so uncomfortable it had to drive them crazy. For my entire stay everybody that helped me demonstrated a complete knowledge of what they were doing and patiently took time to explain it to me. They not only took care of me physically, but at times it was more important to keep my spirits up, which they constantly did. With people coming and going, completely covered in protective gear, it was very hard to recognize individual people. I do know and remember Dr. Mark Gay, Kaila Galpin, Karen Cook, Jackie Scruggs, Keller Perdue, Jasmine Daniels, Shirley Hand, Renee White, Crystal Fransen, Natasha Sanders, Davarrio Chavers, Pat Dean, Leslie Stone, Ed Newton, and Michael (I forget his last name). There were others that I could not see their name tags under the protective clothing. The really sad thing is that months from now I will pass these wonderful people on the street downtown and will not even know their faces due to the masks they wore. I do know that the standard of care my entire visit was excellent. The treatment was exceptional, and the personal attention was something that I will never forget. We are blessed with many things here in Bainbridge, Georgia but the staff at the hospital were like angels and I will always be grateful to those for all they did for me. Sincerely, Jon M McRae
