In today's Target for Today we're talking with Author Jan Powers about her book "Pieces of Us." It's the Story of Lt Leonard Crandell. Lt Leonard Crandell was killed in action on March 24, 1945 while piloting a 44thBG B-24 during Operation Varsity. Jan was just an infant. Her book is a story of discovering the story of her father.

May 27, 1944 Returned to England T/Sgt Kenneth Shaver 384thBG 560thSQ Top Turret Gunner/Flight Engineer ... Shot down on November 5, 1943 on a mission to Gelsenkirchen Escape and Evasion Report #675 Escape and Evasion Reports: A primary source for information on the evasion of American airmen during WWII, other than books written by the airmen themselves, is the escape and evasion report (E&E), compiled by Allied military intelligence after the airmen had returned to Allied control. According to the August 2006 issue of the AFEES newsletter, Escape and Evasion numbers exist primarily for members of the 8th and 9th Air Forces, who were debriefed in London. They were not recorded for airmen debriefed only at group or Air Force headquarters. Airmen liberated by Allied ground forces, Swiss internees, those who went down in the Balkans, or who became POW after evading for some time do not normally have an E&E number. The escape and evasion (E&E) reports of American airmen are available online, thanks to the staff of National Archives II (NAII) at College Park, Maryland. https://catalog.archives.gov/id/305270 Their database of E&E reports can be searched by the name of the airman or his E&E report number. For further information on searching E&E reports, see https://wwii-netherlands-escape-lines.com//escape-evasion/. https://airforceescape.org/history/

Remembrance is Our Mission: THE POPPY PROJECT The Education Department is striving to honor the over 26,000 men of the Eighth Air Force who gave their lives in WWII to help end tyranny and bring freedom back to the world. To help students pay tribute to these men and understand better how many lives were lost, the Education Department is creating a wall of poppies commemorating their sacrifice. We hope to collect 26,000 red paper poppies created by students across Americ...a to include on our Poppy Wall of Valor. Each poppy will pay homage to the ultimate sacrifice a member of the Eighth Air Force made for his country and the world. While visiting the museum, students and adults will pass this humbling exhibit displaying the magnitude of the mortality suffered during the war. Twenty six thousand poppies will give a deeper understanding of this great number and how many gave their lives. With the death of over 26,000 men, the Eighth Air Force lost more men than the entire Marine Corps during WWII. Please help us pay tribute to these heroes today. Your freedom is their gift. _____________ Use materials you already have. Or you can purchase a Poppy Project Parcel: Materials by Mail with everything you need to make Remembrance Poppies. The Poppy Parcel Materials will make at least 10-20 poppies of different types. Please email [email protected] for your Poppy Parcel. Only $10 including shipping. https://vimeo.com/401061057
