It’s a form of exfoliating and it’s done by a trained professional who is usually a licensed esthetician. ... . Here’s my response as an esthetician and as someone who self dermaplanes. . First is the condition of the skin. You often can’t see what’s happening with your skin when you look with the naked eye. A professional can look under the magnifying lamp to see exactly what is going on with the skin at that time and determine if dermaplaning is appropriate. If your skin is sensitized, sunburned, has active acne, is unbalanced, or is overexfoliated, you are not a good candidate and if done, you run the risk of damaging your skin. . Let’s talk about the tool. A razor is designed to remove hair and the angle of the blade in the plastic is specific to that. A razor is meant to be used with water or some kind of slip agent to protect the skin. Dry shaving with a tool that’s meant to be used wet is not a great use of that tool. . Dermaplaning meant to be done dry and the esthetician can adjust the angle of the blade to remove the hair and the dead skin and also adjust the pressure and technique to customize the result based on your needs. The skin must be pulled very taught to avoid damage. . After care is crucial. Knowing what to apply and how to adjust your routine after exfoliating will ensure that your skin is not compromised. .
