This picture is the kind of nonsense propaganda designed to limit how long a baby will nurse. This was from a Canadian Medela FB post years ago and it's a compl...ete lie. Below, I've posted a Q&A between a mom and me from my website to help illustrate why it's nonsense: Mom: "I have a 9-month old that has successfully breastfed since birth. Now his top two teeth are fully in and he is having trouble adjusting his latch. I assumed he would figure it out eventually but now it has been 4-5 weeks and it’s still painful to breastfeed, leaving indentations/sores on my nipples as his teeth dig in while he eats. I have to exclusively pump to allow myself to heal. I lifted up his top lip and his frenulum attaches deep between his teeth. I’m not sure if I’d say it’s restricted, however. Have you seen an older baby need a release once teeth erupt, given there were no problems with the latch prior to teeth? Thanks in advance. Me: Yes, this is a common story. It's most likely related to tongue-tie (or less commonly lip tie). The reason? Before teeth, the ties(s) forced the baby to use the lips/gums to hold on to the breast, but for whatever reason, that didn't hurt. Once teeth erupt, the baby who is already using the gums will now cause pain. It is not the teeth that are the source of the poor latch - you have to look for the reason why the baby is relying on the gums/teeth to hold on, and that's most likely a tie. Babies with teeth (without ties) go on to nurse for as long as it works without causing pain. Some babies get teeth quite young (~4 months of age). Imagine how faulty biology would be from an evolutionary standpoint if infants with teeth just caused mom severe nipple pain! While the teeth may be causing your new pain, don't blame the teeth - you need to dig deeper to find the source.

My mother's nursing facility was amazing at fighting the influx of COVID 19. They worked so hard and, in spite of their work, this evil virus gained entry. Yesterday afternoon my 90 year old mother passed from COVID19 pneumonia. Hospice and the nursing staff made her passing as peaceful as possible. We were called to her bedside, masked and sanitized, to say our good byes on Tuesday, before her diagnosis. I say all of this to say that Natural Choice Birth & Breastfeeding will be closed until Tuesday, September 8 to include our quarantine time and the celebration of her life. 07/17/20 Hello, VBA2C I can’t believe I did it!, I can’t believe I did it!, I can’t believe I did it!... This birth story of Shared Decision Making (SDM) and mutual empowerment, is shared with permission by Taylor Monroe and her Doula, Katrina Goodman. Briefly: 1. In 2015, Ms. Monroe at 38 weeks EGA transferred her care to my care, with a breech presentation for birth options. The ECV (external cephalic version) was not successful, and upon spontaneous labor at 41 weeks, she had a healthy Family Centered Cesarean birth (of note a bicornuate uterus was diagnosed at this time). 2. In 2016, at term, and again with a breech presentation (declining an ECV), and with her previous birth, Ms. Monroe elected to have another empowering Family Centered Cesarean birth. 3. And 4 years later, on 07/14/20 Ms. Monroe opted for a trial of labor; which began spontaneously at 41 wks EGA. With the indelible support, source energy and guidance from her Doula, Katrina Goodman, and ~ 18 hours of hard labor, Taylor vaginally birthed baby Caroline; wt 7’10. Uniquely with guidance, Taylor caught her own baby, pulling her directly to her chest immediately; and also completing the journey earthside with a Lotus birth. VBA2C. As I was involved with all 3 births, it gave me chills to witness and hear in Taylor’s own words, over & over again in an emotionally powerful voice say clearly: I can’t believe I did it!!! Shared decision making (SDM) is not an academic exercise, it’s a mindset evolution, of which Taylor Monroe is happy to attest to in the accompanying video (3?s/3 min). On Tuesday, June 23, 2020, Arika died suddenly just one week after giving birth by emergency c-section to a baby boy at 30.5 weeks. He is doing well and in ...NICU for the foreseeable future. Arika was a dedicated public servant, who served honorably in the Obama Administration, both in the Office of First Lady Michelle Obama and at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She then went on the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Education and Labor, and at the time of her death, was serving at the American Hospital Association, communicating the critical needs of the nation's hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. She cared deeply about school nutrition and ensuring that every person has access to affordable healthcare. She was just 29 years old Sadly, we know this is a crisis in America that is not affected by education or income. According to the CDC, Black women are three to four times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than white women.
