12/24/2020- Snow Potential Update **PLEASE READ POST FOR IMPORTANT DETAILS** Good early afternoon North Georgia! We continue to track the potential for scattere...d snow showers later this afternoon into tonight. First, we want emphasize that while we have slightly upgraded snow projections for this afternoon through early tomorrow morning, this is NOT going to be a winter storm or widespread accumulating snow event. We promise that nobody needs to rush out for milk, bread, and eggs. Also, it is important to note that the exact details remain highly uncertain as to where snow will fall or accumulate, and our forecast map is intended to be a broad guide. Here’s a breakdown of the forecast for snowfall: *In the BLUE area, which covers the vast majority of the coverage area, spotty snow showers or flurries are possible late this afternoon through Christmas morning, with chances ranging from 30% to the South to 50% further North. We do NOT expect all of the areas highlighted in blue to see snow due to its spotty nature. Very narrow bands of snow will allow for some locations to see up to a dusting of accumulation, while others are left with nothing. This is very similar to scattered thunderstorms during the summertime in that we cannot predict exactly where bands of precipitation will develop. *In the DARK BLUE and PURPLE shaded areas covering far Northern and a slither of far Northwestern Georgia, showers this afternoon are expected to change to a period of wintry mix, and then snow. Spotty bands of snow showers are then expected to continue periodically through tonight and into tomorrow morning. In these areas, the potential for accumulating snow is higher, with most locations likely to see at least a coating. Amounts of 1 to 2 or more are most likely at the highest elevations, especially along Northwestern facing slopes. Keep in mind that even in areas that do not receive snowfall, patchy areas of black ice will be possible after sunset, especially on bridges, overpasses, and other elevated surfaces. Please exercise caution if you do plan to be out this evening or overnight. We’ll be back later this afternoon with another update. Keep an eye on the sky and thank you for following North Georgia Weather Authority!
