What can you do for your neighbor that will demonstrate for them the love of Jesus?

Pastor Laura Patterson: "Don't be confused and led astray by the false choices that the empire offers you, but instead seek and find the way of Christ, which leads to life."

Each fall at Oconee Street UMC, children are invited to the altar to stand with their Sunday school classes and officially start the new year. The kids who are promoting to a new Sunday school class take a ceremonial step to join a new group and meet a new teacher. While we currently aren’t meeting for in-person Sunday school or worship, the children’s Sunday school teachers want to mark this time and get a chance to see the precious faces we miss. Next Sunday October 4, we’ll have our first drive through Communion service from 2-3:30pm. Everyone is welcome, because this is Jesus’s table and not ours. You’ll stay in your cars and receive a bag with bread and juice that your family can share together. If you arrive before or at 2pm, you’ll be able to respond to the Great Thanksgiving with the gathered body. We are located across the street from Mama's Boy, down the hill from downtown Athens. Come and celebrate God’s grace! #athensga #rethinkchurch #reconcilingministries #grace #eucharist

The Global Board of Church and Society, an advocacy arm of the United Methodist Church, has issued a statement strongly opposing the actions of ICE agents in Maryland, who on September 10, violated the agency’s Sensitive Locations policy and lied to Binsar Siahaan, an Indonesian asylum-seeker and six-year member of the Glenmont United Methodist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland in order to arrest him and begin deportation proceedings. In a clear violation of the agency’s own ...policy, ICE entered church property to arrest and detain Mr. Siahaan, who serves as the congregation’s caretaker and lives on the property with his family. Oconee Street has worked alongside our immigrant neighbors in Athens for years, providing support and welcome. In doing so, we aim to live out the scriptural mandate of loving and welcoming our neighbors. This September 10 action appears to be the first time that ICE has entered church property to make an arrest. As the UMC Book of Resolutions states: To refuse to welcome migrants to this country and to stand by in silence while families are separated, individual freedoms are ignored, and the migrant community in the United States is demonized by members of Congress and the media is complicity to sin. Members of various faiths and congregations across the community, including members of Oconee Street, will be joining Dignidad Inmigrante and all allies of the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition to call out the most recent abuses against women detainees at Irwin Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia and the ICE arrest and detention of an asylum seeker on United Methodist church property in Silver Spring, Maryland. This community and faith-based action will take place on: Saturday September 26, 2020 11am-noon City Hall- Downtown Athens Masks, Hand-sanitizer and Sign-making materials will be available on site (or bring your own of each of these) Social Distance at the location or participate from your parked car https://www.umcjustice.org//67e9ac98-2f08-4adc-a95d-e94ea3
