The National Technical Honor Society at Ogeechee Technical College (OTC) recently hosted its annual spring induction ceremony in the Joseph E. Kennedy auditorium at the College. Twenty-nine new members who achieved and maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average, and who received recommendations from their instructors, were inducted into the organization and received their official NTHS portfolios. A mechanic, a saloon keeper, and a barber, Richard Bowie Spikes was multitalented, but perhaps he was more well known for his many patents. Among them were several that contributed to the automotive field. Spikes' gear shifting device made major strides in improving the automatic transmission, and his automatic brake safety system is still utilized in some buses as a fail-safe means of the stopping the vehicle. Celebrating Mariya Russell, the first black female chef awarded a Michelin Star kitchen. Famous black female chefs like Leah Chase and Edna Lewis helped pave the way for Mariya Russell, the first black woman to earn a Michelin Star. In 2020 Russell earned her star for work as a chef de cuisine of the popular Chicago bar Kumiko and it's sister restaurant, Kikko. Specializing in small plates that showcase Japanese technique, ingredients and flavors, her culinary skills combine...d with her hospitality has garnered her with an achievement never before earned by a black female chef. The Early Childhood Care and Education program at Ogeechee Technical College now has a larger and better suited workspace as part of a $1 million renovation of the Joseph E. Kennedy Building. Mungunchavkhdas Moona Shurentsetseg is one of the many students in the Early Childhood program that will benefit from the newly renovated 2,100 square foot space that includes two private offices, a traditional classroom, a 1,549 square foot multi-use lab, two dedicated storage rooms,... and a connected outdoor educational space. Teaching has always been a passion of mine, said Moona. I love children with all of my heart and this new lab space gives us everything we need to learn how to become better teachers.
